When my son was little, we attended a co-op preschool in Manhattan Beach, California in which the sole curriculum was "conflict resolution". Because of this, none of these art centers contained any holiday references. The kids never even came home with a Mother's or Father's Day card in the event that one of their students didn't have both dad and mom in their lives.

We transferred to Santa Cruz, California in time for my son to get started on kindergarten. I soon learned that Santa Cruz had an entirely different policy about holidays. To my amazement, one of several kindergarten teachers a Christmas tree in her classroom! Then in the springtime, inside my daughter's co-op preschool, I became again faced with the several policy. One of several art centers contained stickers of bunnies and Happy easter !. Once i brought this for the attention with the teacher, her response was, "Those aren't religious symbols."

It's interesting to note that men and women have differing beliefs by what may or may not be religious symbols. Computer work a Menorah downtown this coming year because some think it is inappropriate to get a religious symbol through the post office. Despite this, I know that you will have plenty Christmas related symbols through the downtown in 2010. Lights, trees, bells, holly and much more are displayed throughout town in schools, stores, and other public.

So as an alternative to beat them, I have faith that let's join them. Generally Jews certainly are a bit shy about public displays of religiosity as a result of all of the anti-Semitism that we've encountered. So this is a approach to stand up with pride, along with some methods for yiddishe mama with small children. These pointers help kids enjoy their Jewish identity despite being bombarded by each of the fun, vibrant colored, and exquisite holiday symbols that simply don't fit in with them.

1. When school starts, let the teacher know before hand that the child is Jewish and will also be absent on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (our winter holiday). Ask for a little consideration and also to please not plan any exhilarating special projects on those times so that your child won't feel overlooked. Ask the institution board as well as your principal that will put christmas inside their school calendar so teachers are aware of them.

2. Around Hanukah, ask your child's teacher when you can appear in to the classroom to make latkes. The kids love them! I've had kids ask me every year easily was going to make latkes and i have had parents thank me for doing it. If you want, turn this right into a cooking lesson. Allow it to be easy on yourself by ordering bags of frozen shredded potatoes and minced onion through the supermarket. Or perhaps cause them to become at home and bring them in already warm. Browse the Hanukah story from your picture book as they definitely eat. You can also light a menorah to restore truly exciting. As soon as the children are done eating, make them learn the best way to play dreidle. Peanuts in the shell work very well for that dreidle game kitty - should there be no peanut allergies.

3. Use a latke party both at home and invite relatives and friends. Chocolate gelt may be used to play dreidle with. Inside our family, each person has their own menorah to light. My daughter designed a gorgeous menorah one year together with a square of granite. You may need lots of candles for all those menorahs nevertheless the light is worth it. After lighting, march around your table, like Maccabees singing Chanukah songs. Did you know that it's actually a tradition for yiddishe mama to easily spend time at the table and like the light as the candles burn? Get your entire cooking and serving done first and revel in this relaxing 20 minute-meditation-mitzvah for girls only!

4. Use books and CDs to help you your children end up in the break spirit. There are lots of children's books that tell the tale of Hanukah. One among my personal favorite picture books is named, "Festival of Lights, The storyline of Hanukkah" by Maida Silverman. My daughter always loved the sticker book, "Melly's Menorah" by Amye Rosenberg. For teenagers, you will find there's chapter book called, "Jason's Miracle: A Hanukkah Story" by Beryl Lieff Benderly. For teenagers and adults, there exists a book called, "The Complete Story of Chanukah" by Nissan Mindel. The very best CD There is for Jewish holidays is, "To Life! Chanukah and Other Jewish Celebrations". Cindy Paley boasts a nice Chanukah CD and "A Singing Seder" for Passover.

5. Being with Jewish children helps your kids know he/she isn't alone in celebrating holidays which might be distinctive from almost all of the other children in class. Community is found at the many synagogues about. Additionally, there are many places that you can find out more about Judaism. The most popular location to go is Chabad.org where there are plenty of articles, mp3 downloads and videos - all totally free. But even if you can just learn alef, start there, you'll be able to teach your young ones "alef".

If they are confronted with the gorgeous, glittery and glowing holiday symbols that permeate our universe throughout the "holidays", are aware that you'll be able to give your kids something they are able to enjoy that's each of their own. Youngsters are happy to are aware that some holidays participate in others when they have something special of their very own. You are able to flourish in imparting the most effective that Judaism is offering by enjoying the many Jewish holidays all year round. They will often do not have the glamour and glitter however they provides your children with deep meaning and miracles, a sense values, along with a heritage they're able to take immense pride in.
