Like the rest of the Marvel family, Mary was, for decades, cute and sweet and innocent and forever stuck in the 50's, in the most endearing way possible. And then Infinite Crisis came and everything had to be grittied up in the world of the Marvels. After the One Year Later jump, Mary's Shazam powers suddenly disappeared while she was flying and fighting bad guys. She managed to survive the fall, but spent the better part of a year comatose as a result. When she woke up in Countdown, she still didn't have any powers and Billy and Freddy were too busy to even let her know they were too busy to talk with her. So she wandered around until she got some powers on loan from Black Adam, which somehow inexplicably made her EXTREEEEEME. And gave her a new costume which somehow manages to have less cloth than the costume worn by Evil!Dominatrix!Mary in the second Superbuddies mini. Everyone is hoping for the best as an end result, but things look to get worse, with the "before they get better" part looking less and less like a realistic wish.
