The batshit fucking loco version of Hal Jordan, Parallax came into being during the emerald twilight, in which Hal, annoyed over having his hometown blown to smitherines by the Cyborg Superman, killed all the Green Lanterns and took the central battery's power. He used this power to begin the events of Zero Hour in a plan to restore the universe as it should have been. The Spectre kicked his ass.
Returning during The Final Night, Hal heroically sacrificed his life to reignite our dead sun, only to come back in Day of Judgement as another body for the Spectre.
Now it has been revealed by the writer Geoff Johns that Parallax was actually a sentient omnipotent creature fueled by fear. Or something. This thereby made everything not entirely Hal's fault. Good show sir.
