:I came after RWW dating system was implemented, so I haven't had much of an opportunity to express my opinion on it. I am opposed to it. The system is confusing, pointless, and a failed attempt at creating an inside joke. Only the four people who regularly edit here get it. I see you have utterly abandoned any pretense to the RWW dating scheme. :My best recommendation would be to copy one from another wiki that is "close". I'd actually recommend going to CP, since they are less likely to be complex and nested (so many WP ones are I gave up on them!) At cp there is a "university" one, I think. Great TK banning Incident

'''The Great TK banning Incident''' began on 15 January 2008 when [[Robledo]] wrote, “Grow a pair. Nuke him.” Moments later the site switched into [[Headless Chicken Mode]] and the fun began.
Although permabanning seems to be outside the site’s remit [[Radioactive afikomen]], [[Kels]] and [[AmesG]] supported the idea and the voting on his permaban began.

==The voting==
Somewhat surprisingly the voting did not seem to split along the anticipated [[cabal]] lines. This suggests that it was not premeditated or controlled in any way but really was as chaotic as it looked. Initially those who called for the vote confidently expected a super-duper majority for permabanning.

==Majority?==
As time went on the vote got harder to call, and the question of what would be an appropriate majority had to be readdressed as the expected super-duper majority was clearly not going to be obtained. Consequently another vote was called, this time on the size of the majority that would be necessary for a peramban. The suggestion being voted on was, "Will a two to one majority be sufficient?" Of the eight people who voted, four were clearly in favor of the “two to one” proposal and the rest either wanted a simple majority or said something else.

Eventually, the result of the permaban vote was to be 14 in favor of a permaban and 10 against; in other words, nothing like two to one. But by then, the point was moot as the punishment had already been enacted.

==The banning==
Even while the voting was in progress various people decided to circumvent the process and ban TK before it was complete. The full sequence of that day’s blocks and unblocks can be seen below.

Furthermore, although the vote was about the subject of an infinite ban, the actual bans for TK on that date were: 314 seconds, 3141 seconds, infinite, 5 years, 143 days and finally 54 days.

The various calculations seem to have been carried out by individuals based on their own feelings at the time, and to have little to do with the discussions taking place on the Wiki.

==Fibonacci sequence==
Although the vote was about a permablock, three individuals ([[Cracker]], [[Edgerunner76]] and [[Linus]]) seem to have failed to grasp this point and unilaterally decided to apply their own opinions. Cracker inventing 5 years and Edgerunner76 and Lunis going with their own differing interpretations of the [[Fibonacci sequence]] instead. It is not surprising that their Fibonacci calculations were different as TK’s previous blocks had not followed the sequence and attempting to retrofit the Fibonacci to the previous random value blocks was not really practical. As neither of them published their calculations it is not clear how they arrived at their figures.

Nevertheless, looking at TK's block history, it does seem as though at some point in June 2007 an attempt was made to start a Fibonacci sequence with these three blocks:

* 19 June 2007 [[Jtl]] 3 hours
*16 June 2007 Jtl 2 hours
*16 June 2007 Human 1 hour

Later block values were pretty random and varied between seconds and infinity. Some subsequent blocks were also frivolous, were later repealed for being too harsh or were [[malicious block]]s. After a review there would seem to have been a further 10 blocks after the three listed above which were not later repealed or jokes. Calculating in hours that would take us up to a Fibonacci number of 337 (hours) or 14 days if they had, in fact, followed the appropriate sequence. The number of days finally applied - 55 - is not only grossly in excess of this value but is also equivalent to 1320 hours which is not a Fibonacci number.

55 itself is, of course, a Fibonacci number. But if it is argued that the process changed into Fibonacci days at some point, then the fist block for days was this one:

* 11 December 2007 AmesG 3 days.

3 is a Fibonacci number, and after this block there were a further three “real” blocks before the vote. That would still only take us to 13 days on the Fibonacci sequence.

*RationaWiki began a voting process about something which was against the site’s principles.
*There was no clear idea about how the voting should be carried out.
*The vote seems to not have properly complied with the secondary vote on the process.
*The sentence was carried out before the voting process had finished.

I think it's a bit unfair (especially considering the weak example used, which isn't even from RW) to make a big deal out of this, since many of us on RW are challenged in some way in our writing style. We all act (as on any wiki) as each others' proofreaders and copyeditors. As long as the meaning is reasonably clear, it shouldn't matter much. Icewedge is spelling-impaired, yet has built a couple of good on-topic articles. Trent forgets to use commas and splits compound words all the time. Eira, although not as active of late, tends to use too many words. Another factor is '''Lulz'''. Lulz is the use of humor of various kinds, and sometimes involves rationalwikians making fun of each other. It’s always a bit tricky as perpetrators cannot see the reactions of victims. Then things go wrong and resentment which others didn’t know about gets out of hand.

Headless Chicken Mode (HCM), like DEFCON, has a number of levels.
*HCM1 – example: any discussion in community standards. People remain friends, but debate is endless and ultimately fruitless.
*HCM2 – example: any discussion in which [[TK]] claims there is a conspiracy against him. People take sides but nobody leaves. (Possibly an obsolete level.)

Her oddly-worded articles tend to focus on the Roman Catholic Church and their sexual prejudices. Initially, she worked in a sort of vacuum, with no one willing to touch her work, possibly because they didn't want to validate it by correcting it. However, with time, others have grown more comfortable with her, perhaps beginning with [[Human]]'s [http://rationalwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magdalene_asylum&diff=120748&oldid=118101 drastic rewrite] of her byzantine "Magdalene laundries" article. Presumably users no longer fear being struck down by [[AKjeldsen]] if they encourage her.

Barbara Shack initially refrained from interacting with the other users (much like Icewedge), possibly out of shyness. Lately, however, she has demonstrated a willingness to talk with others, a trend that will hopefully continue. Nonetheless, others' first impressions of her are harder to fade, and even the most radical atheists on the site, such as [[Bob M]] and [[SusanG]], seem in no hurry to hang out with her.

She really doesn't like her article here.

Here on RWW, she also seems to be very concerned with [[Elassint]]'s mental health, and the possibility that [[Hans Johnson]] might be trying to provoke poor E.'s untimely death at his own hands.

Her oddly-worded articles tend to focus on the Roman Catholic Church and their sexual prejudices. Initially, she worked in a sort of vacuum, with no one willing to touch her work, possibly because they didn't want to validate it by correcting it. However, with time, others have grown more comfortable with her, perhaps beginning with [[Human]]'s [http://rationalwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magdalene_asylum&diff=120748&oldid=118101 drastic rewrite] of her byzantine "Magdalene laundries" article. Presumably users no longer fear being struck down by [[AKjeldsen]] if they encourage her.

Barbara Shack initially refrained from interacting with the other users (much like Icewedge), possibly out of shyness. Lately, however, she has demonstrated a willingness to talk with others, a trend that will hopefully continue. A tradition unique to [[RationalWiki]], the so-called '''friendly block''' is a common event - in fact, far more common than any other kind of block.

Sysops often slap each other, and non-sysops, with short blocks, often utilizing strange block comments. Ideally friendly blocks should take place only between consenting adults.

Sometimes new editors are briefly blocked as a form of <s>irritation</s> initiation rite. The newcomers probably won’t notice it unless they happen to try and save something during the short time that the block operates.

New sysops are also encouraged to "practice" their new blocking skills by randomly blocking a few better-known editors.

There is a case for practicing blocking. The following happened to a sysop on another Wiki. She noticed that the user page of the respected site owner had been vandalized. She set about blocking the vandal. (It looked like the work of an immature boy but it may just have been a girl.) She had never had reason to block anyone before. By the time she had worked out what she needed to do and filled in the “reason for block” and the “duration of block” sections someone else had blocked him. No harm was done but there could have easily been 20 blanked pages, which would have been tedious to revert. A short autoblock is a good way of practising without anyone feeling threatened, if one is in an environment where a short block might make someone feel threatened.
