"Dad [Kenneth (1896)] worked for Ax Billy's Grocery Store when he and Mom were first married. He drove delivery truck. I remember him telling about backing up the street car tracks on South Chambers, when it was icy and he had a delivery to make there. He drove a Model T. Later, he had 2 dump trucks that he hired out to the county (Lane) for road building jobs and to the city of Eugene for the building and paving of Birch Lane. He trucks were Internationals. (He taught me to drive one when I was 9 years old.) ... Elvin Thurman (our cousin) drove for him for a number of years. When the labor unions started coming in Elvin reported Dad for not being union so Dad lost a lot of work. .. Dad's last truck was a 1935 Ford, but by then the county and state had their own trucks. In 1937 or 1938 he and Kenny [son] worked on the tunnel on Highway 58.

"Dad also worked on the Dorris Ranch before he met Mom. He had his greenhouses in West Springfield before the flood of 1947 washed them away. He furnished bedding plants for the grocery stores, feed stores and for Chase Gardens. We all helped. I helped put glass in the greenhouses and helped to build the flats. I transplanted and sold plants. Aunt Bertha, Grandpa and Mom worked in them, too. Dad's last job was painter for Chase Gardens."
