History

After centuries of foreign occupation, a small Armenian national state finally gained independence amid the chaos of the disintegration of Tsarist power in 1917 - but its real independence was short lived. After the defeat of the Entente and the successful German intervention in the Russian Civil War, Armenia was arbitrarily given as a new province to the Ottoman Empire. Once under Ottoman rule social and religious repression followed quickly, resulting in massive protests and several underground movements. During the late 1920s, with the decline of the Ottoman authority over the Empire and mounting internal pressure, Armenia managed to win the position of an autonomous region, much like Libya. In 1936,

Armenia seems to be economically and politically stable - but under the surface the country remains something of a 'powder-keg' for it’s Ottoman masters. Armenia still has various territorial disputes with her neighbours, and some people are demanding a return to the stability of Russian rule, whilst other movements call for complete independence.
