The championship will be exclusive to the Raw brand, and it was created to rival the IWE Championship, which became exclusive to SmackDown following the reintroduction of the IWE brand extension on July 19, 2016. The championship is named in honor of the IWE Universe, the WWE's fan base. The belt design has yet to be revealed.

History

Origin

After IWE Champion Dean Ambrose was drafted to SmackDown Live following the 2016 WWE draft on July 19, the IWE Championship became exclusive to SmackDown Live. A IWE Championship triple-threat match was already set for Battleground on July 24, 2016, between Ambrose and Raw draftees Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. Ambrose retained the IWE Championship, thus solidifying its exclusivity to SmackDown.

On the July 25, 2016 Raw, brand commissioner Kaila Matteson stated that Raw must have a world championship. Raw General Manager Mick Foley then announced the creation of the IWE Universal Championship to be Raw's world championship, and said it was named in honor of the WWE Universe, the name used to refer to the IWE's fan base. The first-ever champion will be determined at SummerSlam on August 21, 2016. Two Fatal 4-way matches took place on the July 25, 2016 Raw, with the winners of both facing each other in the main event of Raw to determine who will face Seth Rollins at SummerSlam. Matteson automatically placed Rollins in the championship match because he did not get pinned at Battleground. Finn Bálor was victorious in the first match, which also involved Kevin Owens, Cesaro, and Rusev. Roman Reigns won the second match, which also involved Sami Zayn, Sheamus, and Khris Jericho.
