The 2024 World War is the 36th annual World War professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by WIW. It will be held for wrestlers from the promotion's Rage and ShowDown brand divisions. The event will take place on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Kendrick Field in Helena, Montana.

The event is based around the World War Rumble match, and the winner traditionally receives a world championship match at that year's SuperBrawl. For the 2024 event, the winners of both the men's and women's matches receive a choice of which championship to challenge for at SuperBrawl XVI. The men can choose to challenge for either Rage's World Heavyweight Championship or ShowDown's Undisputed WIW World Heavyweight Championship, while the women have the choice between Rage's Women's World Championship and ShowDown's WIW Women's Championship.

Production

Background

The World War is an annual professional wrestling event produced every January by WIW since 1999. It is one of the promotion's five biggest events of the year, along with SuperBrawl, SummerBash, Soul Survivor, and Money in the Bank, referred to as the "Big Five". The concept of the event is based around the World War Rumble match, a modified battle royal in which the participants enter at timed intervals instead of all beginning in the ring at the same time.

Announced on September 13, 2023, the 37th Royal Rumble is scheduled to be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Kendrick Field in Helena, Montana and will feature wrestlers from the Rage and ShowDown brand divisions.

The Royal Rumble match generally features 30 wrestlers and the winner traditionally earns a world championship match at that year's WrestleMania. For 2024, the men and women can choose which world championship to challenge for at SuperBrawl XVI; the men can choose Rage's World Heavyweight Championship or ShowDown's Undisputed WIW World Heavyweight Championship, while the women have the choice between Rage's Women's World Championship and ShowDown's WIW Women's Championship.

Storylines

The event will include matches that result from scripted storylines. Results are predetermined by WIW's writers on the Rage and ShowDown brands, while storylines are produced on WIW's weekly television shows, Wednesday Night Rage and Friday Night ShowDown, which is moved from it's original Saturday night when WIW holds it's pay-per-views on Saturdays.

Before he went on hiatus, James Burdick was about to start a feud with The McAlmond Bloodline (Martin McAlmond, TJ McAlmond and Brad McAlmond). The following year at All Hail in November 2023 Zack Harding, Robert (who was representing champion Martin McAlmond, who is unable to compete) to retain the Undisputed WIW World Heavyweight Championship after interference from The McAlmond Bloodline. On the following episode of ShowDown, Harding stated that he was not done with The McAlmond Bloodline until he defeated whoever would represent Martin as champion for the title. Burdick then returned at WIW Soul Survivor: WarGames later that same month, and on the December 2 episode of ShowDown, he signed with the ShowDown brand after fending off an attack by The McAlmond Bloodline (which had since added Dylan McAlmond while TJ had left the group earlier that summer), vowing to get revenge. Two weeks later, the returning Kevin Hunter helped Harding and Burdick fend off The McAlmond Bloodline before attacking Harding. The following week, Hunter explained that he attacked Harding for taking his spot in a tag team match at Final Destination in October 2023. After Burdick interrupted and said that he also wanted a title match against whoever represents Martin, ShowDown General Manager Ediwn announced that Burdick, Hunter, and Harding would compete in a triple threat match at ShowDown: New Year's Resolution on January 5, 2024, where the winner would face the personal representing Martin as champion for the Undisputed WIW World Heavyweight Championship at World War. However, the match ended in a no contest after The McAlmond Bloodline attacked all three competitors. As a result, Edwin announced that whoever Martin cooses to represent him int he match would instead defend his championship in a fatal four way match against Burdick, Harding, and Hunter at World War.

At All Hail on November 4, 2023, Chris Colfer won his first WIW title, the WIW United Nations Championship. Colfer made his first appearance as champion on the December 2 episode of ShowDown where he announced that his first challenger would be determined by a 8-man tournament. The tournament was won by Tyler Posey at ShowDown: New Year's Resolution on January 5, 2024, thus earning a match against Colfer for the title at World War.

After WIW World Champion Kevin McAlmond successfully defended the WIW Reach for the Sky Heavyweight Championship on the November 29 episode of Rage he was attacked by at the time two unknown assilants, who Heavenlee Mcguire revealed as Michael McClaskey and Brandon Thompson, the latter of which is the boyfriend of Mcguire, who stole the Reach for the Sky Championship. On the December 6 episode of Rage, Thompson challenged McAlmond to a non-title match, which McAlmond agreed to. Later that night, Thompson defeated McAlmond after Justin Isaac interfered. The new faction would attack McAlmond and leave him laying in the ring, where McAlmond would cut a promo on them and agreed to put the Reach for the Sky Heavyweight Championship on the line aginast Thompson at World War, while also revealing that he wouldn't be coming alone before a video played of Mark Briscoe along with Jay's kids Gracie Pugh, Jayleigh Pugh, and Gannon Pugh (also known as the Briscoe Family, saying they were coming to World War to watch McAlmond's back. The match was officially made by WIW on January 18 via it's website.
