Appearance

  • Height: 6'
  • Weight: 180 lbs
  • Age: 79
    • Apparent: 24

Vaghn wears his shinigami robes in the standard style. His robes have white trim, rather than the uniform black. His dark-orange hair is wild, barely contained in the ponytail he wears. He ties his hair back with the white sash that all members of the ninth division wear. Usually at least one strand escapes and hangs in front of his face. He has deep green eyes, which always seem thoughtful. He has a strong face, and though he tries to keep himself clean-shaven, he’s often seen with a five o’clock shadow. Vaghn has an athletic, broad-shouldered build.

Personality

Vaghn is a very calm and collected person. He has his extremes, but all around he seems more stable than most. He has a very good sense of humor, and it’s been said that he unsheathes his wit more often than his sword, and it’s still up in the air which is sharper. He is kind to everyone, even those who don’t quite deserve his kindness, and he’s always helping others out with their studies. Anger and hatred are foreign emotions for him, which means he has an incredibly long temper, but little experience in dealing with fury. When he snaps, he snaps hard. There have been only two times since he began his training where he went over the edge, and none involved will speak of them.

Background

Vaghn died when he was 15, in an accident that he won’t talk with anyone about. “An embarrassing way to die” is the most he’s said on the subject. He was from a more rural part of japan, and when he died, he settled down in a place far from the center of Soul Society. He worked on a farm that was responsible for creating the food that high-spirit-power individuals would need, and almost their entire product went to the Shinigami. It was a good business, and Vaghn enjoyed the work. When his spirit power began to make him hungry, he managed to steal a bit of food for himself without anyone noticing. He understood that meant something, but didn’t particularly care. However, about 60 years after his death, a freak hollow incursion turned his world upside down. An Adjuchas Menos and a force of hollows broke into Soul Society, and caused havoc in the less-populated portions of Soul Society. Eight Division Capitan Shunsui Kyōraku and several of his men were close enough to intercept the rampaging hollows. They arrived in time to rescue Vaghn, but nothing and no-one else. After an intense battle, Shunsui detected the (comparatively) young man’s spirit force, and since he had nowhere else to, Shunsui offered to bring him back to the Court of Pure Souls to train as a Shinigami. Of course, he accepted. If he was the type to do so, Vaghn would idolize Shunsui, but he keeps himself to simply respect and gratitude. Occasionally the Capitan checks up on him, and they have been known to go drinking on occasion.

Vaghn has been a good student. His spirit-force is on the high end of the scale, but not out of the ordinary. What sets him apart is his incredible ability to learn and retain skills and techniques. He’s not the best in any of the four areas of combat, but he is not weak in any of them at all. The one area where he is rated highest in is step-techniques, which take many years to master. His Zanpakuto began to speak to him in his second year, but it still has not revealed to him its name. One ability that Vaghn seems to have that is out of the ordinary is an incredible level of control over his spirit force. He can suppress it, focus it, and channel it in ways not thought possible. His most impressive use of this ability is to focus all his ambient spirit-power to one point on his skin or Zanpakuto, essentially turning aside attacks from spirit entities effortlessly, even those much more powerful than he. It takes concentration, but can be very impressive. The downside is that every other point on his body and sword becomes very vulnerable. As such, he only uses the technique in one-on-one fights, and even then only if there is no other way to block his enemy’s attacks.

Zanpakutō

Vaghn’s Soul Slayer is named Shibugasshou (lit. Four Part Harmony). While sealed, it appears as a katana, with a circular guard depicting a boulder, a wave, a cloud and a flame swirling around the blade. The katana’s blade is wider and thicker than a standard sword, and the weapon itself is around 4’8” long, making it considerably larger than an average soul slayer. Oddly, despite the blade’s size, the sword’s balance-point is exactly centered at a point roughly one centimeter above the guard, right where it should be for a well-weighted sword. It’s spirit is unique in that it has four separate representations: An old monk wearing pale blue robes, a samurai wearing blazing red armor, a hugely built peasant farm worker wearing dirty brown clothes, and a beautiful princess wearing a deep shimmering blue-green robe. Each has their own personality, area of expertise, and will only appear one at a time, and unlike most Zanpaktou they appear very often. They all represent the same entity (Shibugasshou), but Vaghn has named each one.

  • Old Man Junbuu (favorable wind) – Represents the element of Air, specializes in step-techniques. Speaks very little, but is incredibly wise. Often gives Vaghn advice when he is in a moral or spiritual dilemma. First of the four aspects that the shinigami was introduced to.
  • Tsuyobi (High Heat Flame – A cooking term) – Represents the element of Fire, specializes in sword fighting techniques. A very intense and driven personality, he does not tolerate weakness or lazyness, and often chides Vaghn if his training is lacking. Most often appears to the shinigami when he is losing in a fight, to remind him of his training and honor. Second of the four aspects.
  • Issui (Current of Water) – Represents the element of water, specializes in Demon Magic. She has a great deal of knowledge of both the spirit world and the living world, and shares it with Vaghn if he asks politely. She prefers to keep her secrets unless absolutely nececary, but when vital information is needed, she will gladly whisper it into the shinigami’s ear. Third of the four aspects to appear.
  • Daichi (Ground, the Earth) – Represents the element of Earth, specializes in hand-to-hand combat. The most “Normal” of the four aspects, Daichi talks in a very familiar and friendly manner. Where the other three help and reinforce Vaghn’s wisdom, courage and intelligence, Daichi only reinforces Vaghn’s confidence in his own personal strength. Daichi rarely appears spontaneously, only coming when despite all other efforts Vaghn has failed, but his presence awakens all of the shinigami’s potential that insecurity or fatigue might have held back.

Shikai

The release command is “Futsuriai (Unbalance), Shibugasshou!” It’s released form is a thick, single-edged blade that comes to a long, sharp point. It has an elaborate guard that runs up along the back of the blade. With this he can command, create, and combine the four elements within a certain range (upwards of 30 yards) of his body. This is usually accompanied by a sword swing, but it does not need to be. He has begun to develop a multitude of attacks and techniques with this ability.

Bankai

Vaghn has not achieved his Bankai, and has made no progress twoards it. However, it's design has been finalized, and it involves the four aspects of his blade becoming internalized.

Notes

  • Vaghn's Reiatsu, while it does have it's own distinct signature, seems to pick up a "Scent" from any Reiatsu he's exposed to. So, if he was doing some crazy training stuff, he'd sense like Vaghn mostly, but there'd be something of almost every Shinigami he's ever run into coming off of him. It's so complex at this point that it's basically impossible to distinguish it from his actual Reiatsu signature, but if you focused enough you could detect the individual "Reiatsu Echoes".
  • He puts a lot of weight in experience, even though by human standards he's a veteran warrior seven times over. Also, the idea of leading is still alien and scary to him, though he tries not to show it. It has been said though that those who do not want to lead make better leaders than those who seek the station.
  • Vaghn learned everything he knows about romance from Shunsui, the master of the art of being a ladies man. Now, he has had to sift through a lot of bad advice, but there's a few gems in there. "In the end, romance is about the other person. It's not what you want, it's what THEY want. If what they want is you, then that's all that matters."
  • In life he had an older brother by about 5 years named Katsuro. What happened to him after Vaghn died is unknown.
  • It has been revealed that Vaghn died when an overloaded donkey cart tipped over on top of him, crushing him beneath it's load of medical supplies. Vaghn had been bending down to pick up a dropped coin at the time.
