Character names can be edited individually in the scenario and save game files. This can be used, eg, to add patronymics or bynames for your characters.

Children born during the game generally have their name controlled by the file db/character_names.

These are displayed in the format

xhosa;female;Kumquat
scythian;male;Zaphod

The first item is the culture associated with the name; the second, the gender. Capitalization is not important for either of these, but will affect the names themselves. "JOhn" will display as "JOhn" in-game; similarly, "john." Generally, you should not add epithets here, since they will appear over and over on new children.

Repeated names will appear more frequently than the rarer, single names.

If there is a culture with no names listed in db/character_names, all of its children will be given the name "Unnamed infant." You can change this default name in configtext.
