The figure before you, standing over your knelt submission, is a terrible mockery of your old and trusted friend. It is interesting.
Its voice grates through the air and rumbles through your spine. "From this day forward, the truth of you, my apprentice, now and forevermore, will be Darth..."
A pause; a questioning in the Force—
An answer, dark as the gap between the galaxies—
You hear Sidious say it: your new name.
Vader.
A pair of syllables that mean you. Vader, you let it take life in your mind. Vader.
"Thank you, my Master," you hear yourself say.
"Every single Jedi," he slowly enunciates the words as if crushing something out of them before they emerge, "is now an enemy of the Republic." Caustic yellow eyes bore through you. "You understand this, don't you?"
"Yes, my Master."
"The Jedi are relentless. So long as they exist, there will be civil war without end. The Jedi Temple will be your first task. Do what must be done, Lord Vader."
"I always have, my Master."
"Do not hesitate. Show no mercy. Leave none alive. Only then will you be strong enough," the Dark Lord's voice changes suddenly to something resembling sympathy, "To save Padme."
"I cannot face the entire Temple alone."
"You will not. The 501st Legion is already en route. They will be waiting for the doors to open."
"What of the other Jedi?"
"Leave them to me," Sidious dismisses the question flatly. "When you are finished with the Temple, you must proceed immediately to the Separatist leadership. You will find them in their 'secret bunker' on Mustafar. When they, too, are eliminated, this war will be finished, and we shall have peace." His voice softens. "Forever."
The Dark Lord's pale hand slowly sweeps upward before him. "Rise, Darth Vader."
It is now that you, the Sith Lord who was once Anakin Skywalker, stand for the first time, energized and confident, released from doctrine's prison and awakened to a new consciousness.
So it begins.
