You pull out your phone and call Kevin, but it goes straight to voicemail. Figuring he’s either sleeping in or too wrapped up in his summer freedom to check his phone, you scroll through your contacts and find Stacy’s number.

Stacy picks up on the second ring. She’s been one of your closest friends since you were kids, part of your trio with Kevin, and she’s never been the girly-girl type. With her long brown hair and striking blue eyes, she has this natural, effortless beauty that everyone notices, but she’s always been more comfortable in jeans and sneakers than anything else.

“Hey! What’s up?” she says, sounding upbeat.

“Not much. Just thought I’d see what you’re up to. Want to hang out?” you ask.

She laughs, already ahead of you. “Definitely! Why don’t you come over? We can chill here, maybe even hit the pool—it’s way too nice a day not to.”

“Perfect,” you say, already picturing the backyard pool glistening under the sun.

“There’s one small catch, though…” she says, hesitating. “Both of my idiot brothers are home, so we’ll probably have to put up with them bugging us.”

You chuckle, shrugging it off. “No problem. I’ll be there soon.”

She has no idea you don’t mind her brothers being around—they’re both ridiculously good-looking, and you’re not complaining about the extra scenery.

Grap your swimming shorts and a towel and go over
