All other flames that you have ever come into contact with can be put out by water. Clearly, these flames are not of the usual sort, and you doubt that any of the other methods would work. Instead of wasting time trying them, you go directly to the writhing black mass and inspect it closely.
The form has a semi-solid, gaseous appearance. Overall, it looks very similar to a cloud of smoke to you. You move your uninjured hand toward the smoke cloud and pass through it, feeling nothing in the process. Then you move your burning hand toward the cloud and notice that the cloud moves away from you. You retract your hand, and the cloud comes nearer to you.
You wonder if perhaps the cloud and the strange flames on your hand are related. Meanwhile, the cats continue their fight over the milk, utterly disinterested in both the strange cloud and your predicament.
Attempt to communicate with the cloud of smoke.
Continue to move your injured hand about and observe what happens.
