You decide to start with the exercise bike instead.

Walking over to the row of stationary bikes, you pick one near the windows and place your bottle of water in the holder. The display lights up as you press the start button, and you adjust the resistance before beginning to pedal.

At first you cycle at an easy pace, letting your legs warm up.

From where you’re sitting you have a good view across most of the gym, and as you settle into the rhythm you begin scanning the room, taking in the different workout areas and the people scattered around them.

Most of the people here seem to be men. Some are lifting weights, others using machines, each focused on their own routines.

Your eyes eventually settle on someone across the room in the weights area.

He’s a stocky, chubby man working through a set of squats with a barbell. His build is thick and powerful rather than lean, and as he lowers into another squat you can’t help noticing his impressively thick thighs and large, rounded glutes working under the strain of the exercise.

You try to focus back on your cycling.

But every so often your eyes drift back toward him as he continues his set, lowering and pushing back up again with steady control.

Without really thinking about it, you start pedaling faster.

The resistance bites a little harder now, your legs working more as your breathing deepens. A light sheen of sweat begins to form on your forehead, and you reach for your water bottle for a quick sip before continuing.

Part of the warmth spreading through you is from the workout.

But part of it might also be from watching the man across the room as he finishes another deep squat and racks the bar.

You keep pedaling, considering what to do next.
