You lean over and drape your arm across Sam's shoulder, and she immediately leans her head onto your shoulder. She takes a deep breath and blows it out slow in a heavy sigh.
"Either way, we're going to find a place where we can be safe, okay?"
"Okay," she says, wrapping her arms around herself. "Do you trust us?"
"I'm not sure," you say, being honest. "I don't know how long it takes a person to...change...or whatever. But we can handle that if and when it occurs."
Sam looks over at Alisha, then back to you. "If you want, you can check me. I really don't mind."
