You heft your hatchet and slowly edge closer to Marie. She readies her knife and does the same, eyes locked on you.
When the two of you get to about 6 feet apart, you both stop approaching and start circling, watching for an opening. You think you see one and aim a quick swing of your hatchet, but Marie skitters out of the way.
The circling resumes, and you dodge a strike by Marie. Your senses are on hyperalert.
You both continue, warily waiting for an opening.
