You scramble across the criminal and try to get to the gun. He recovers faster than you expect and as your hand closes around the grip of the firearm, the criminal jumps on your back.

The gun isn't the only weapon he ends up having as you feel him reach around, grab your chin and yank your head back. His other hand then comes into play and you only see the knife in it for a brief second before he runs it across your throat.

You gurgle up blood as most of your strength leaves you and he quickly reclaims the firearm. He kicks you in the side and then uses his foot to roll you onto your back.

He aims the gun down at you, and pulls the trigger. The muzzle flash is exceedingly bright and momentarily blinds you.

When you open your eyes... you find that you aren't dead, sort of. Your wounds have been healed and there is no hole in your forehead but you now lay in a black abyss where you can see nothing but yourself and darkness.

You sit up as some kind of phantom rises from the ground in front of you. It is made up of a hooded black cloak and a featureless, white porcelain mask where the face should be. It seems to have no discernable form or body, and in the eye sockets of the mask you can see nothing but black.

"A valiant effort, but in the end you failed and I am sure that woman will be joining us down here shortly," the phantom says as it stops rising, and floats a few feet off the ground.

"That means I don't have much time to chat, or play with you right now. Just make yourself comfortable... eternity is a long time, and how long we'll be spending together so this will be your last chance to relax," the phantom says before vanishing, leaving you no chance to respond.

Or point out the fact that the deal was that it was to let you go when you'd paid off your debt. You get the feeling that it didn't just forget that little detail, it probably meant what it said.

You find yourself wishing you hadn't signed that contract.
