"Sounds like a plan, Lieutenant. The choppers will drop your platoon straight into the village. I like it. We'll make sure the helicopters are geared up for you. Get your platoon ready, and head to the tarmac at 1200 hours. Dismissed." You nod and step back, don your helmet, and leave the tent. The morning sun had just become full over the hilly horizon. You think of your young platoon and the mission that awaits them.

You start towards the barracks, preparing your speech. As you walk, a flight of helicopters kicks up the red clay and thunders overhead towards some distant part of this God-forsaken country. You reach your platoon's barracks, a simple tent stocked with racks and shelves spilling with magazines and cassette tapes. Your platoon are mostly awake, putting on their fatigues or shaving in makeshift mirrors. Private First Class Donnolly, who is snacking on some jerky, notices your entry and calls, "Platoon, attention!"

You wave your hand, "At ease gentlemen. Battalion just gave us a mission. We're gonna pull an airborne assault on some gook supply village from the Hueys. We're moving out at 1200s hours. Get your shit together, and fall in outside the barracks in thirty minutes. We'll go over the gear you need then. Fall out."

Later, you think of what gear your men should bring on the assault.

He looked over the map again. He pointed to the village which was surrounded by a multitude of terrain features. "The way we see it, you have four infil locations: North, South, East, or West of the target."

"To the North, it's a bunch of thick jungle hills and valleys. A hard place to navigate and probably filled with dug-in hostiles. It'll give you a better view of the village, though, and should provide good cover in case of an ambush. Keep in mind, negotiating this area will take a while and you could come across enemy bunkers or traps. If you're headed there, be sure to carry machetes and light MGs."

"To the South there's a massive riverbed that will provide easy landing for the choppers. A long dirt road leads straight from the river to the village; however, we assess that it is full of VC booby traps and ambush points. Keep on the road and you should be fine. Be wary of VC sympathizers along the route, too. Do not trust any civilian."

"East of the village there is nothing more than patches of wide open and soaking wet rice terraces. Though ambushing your platoon would be hard, snipers and machine gun positions may be a threat. Destroy them as you see fit, just avoid bringing harm to any neutral farm houses. Follow the terraces upwards and you will find yourself in the village."

"And finally, to the West. There are few trees and the soil is dry, so no underground booby traps or snipers hiding in the trees, but there is an abundance of elephant grass. This can work for or against you. You can sneak your platoon through it unnoticed, or let the VC use it to ambush you. There will be a trail that leads east towards the town. You may want to be mindful of higher ground, as this area sits mostly within a valley."

You both salute again and turn on a heel. You begin to walk towards the CP, a jumbled assortment of tents and radio antennae. After saluting a few passing by enlisted soldiers, you make your way into the complex, heading towards Major Ellison's personal tent. It is a large, triangular structure complete with an attached air conditioner and refrigerator. The life you think to yourself. Taking a deep breath and dusting off your fatigues, you tap on the flap. "Come in!" a Midwestern accent calls.

You enter the dimly lit tent to find a few senior officers all talking around a table littered with maps. All of them looked unkempt and exhausted. Fending of the Tet Offensive had worn the forces to abysmal morale, yet the missions remained routine and unchanged. The major stood in the center, hunkered over the maps, his hand running through his graying hair. You remove your helmet, dropping it to your side. "You wanted to see me, sir?"

He looks up at you with, and you see the dark bags under his eyes. "Yeah, yeah, of course," he fumbles, "come over here Lieutenant." You make your way to the table and respectful acknowledge the other officers. The biggest map on the table is a topographical rendering of tri-border between Cambodia, Laos, and South Vietnam - a hotbed for Viet Cong and NVA activity. The map is dotted with hundreds of "X"s and other markings, all somehow stringing together into one massive representation of enemy activity.

"Recently," the major starts, gesturing to the map in your focus, "our contacts have discovered an increase in Northern Vietnamese border crossing, particularly in and around the village of Bi Lhan, here." He pointed to a small black dot that straddled the Laotian border, surrounded by woods and rivers. "The VC have created a system of tunnels and villages that let them move easily throughout the area. They've been hitting ARVN forces in the area pretty hard." He looked at me, dead in the eye. "We need you to take your platoon and perform recon of the area, and direct action if necessary. Though we don't know where the forces are specifically, the operation is in your hands. You could perform reconnaissance of the area and call in precise air strikes on known targets, a direct airborne assault of the village, or try to lure the enemy out of their hiding and into an ambush. The summer sun beats down upon your neck as you walk through Bi Naht firebase in northwest South Vietnam, a hell hole surrounded by burned out jungle and elephant grass. Olive green cavalry Hueys sit idly on a patch of red dirt, waiting for action. Your helmet jingles as your make towards the Chow Hall. Jeeps and men move to and fro, all focused on their mundane tasks for the day. You gaze at the horizon, sighing at the prospect of being there, fighting the elusive enemy.

Corporal Donaldson, 2nd Squad's leader, suddenly approaches you from behind. He is a short but stocky native Texan, a recent graduate of the NCO academy. His close cropped ginger hair is tucked neatly below his green, Army issue baseball cap. His blue eyes bulge with enthusiasm. Like all of them, he wanted to be out there.

"Sir," he greets you with a crisp salute. You return the salute and nod. He continues, "Major Ellison would like to speak with you. He says it is urgent."
