I would prefer if I wasn't the only one who works on my stories. I have already posted at least 115 pages, and that's just the stories that I made. Poor Platypus.

Why is everyone creating all these stories all of the sudden, some of them are not even appropriate for the family-friendly section!!!! While I admit that as an adult I dont spend time in the family friendly section. The grievances you have reported so far could be explained in context into a family setting. You have used car theft and discouraging school as examples. While a character in a story taking a car at gunpoint, showing no remorse and crashing said car into a kindergarten immediately before setting C-4 in the building would be an obvious case in which something is inappropriate, I have a feeling its more complex then that. If for example the car is taken off the street with no one around keys in the ignition by a young person trying to get their grandmother to the hospital as shes having a heart attack then the classification becomes more complicated. While overt sexuality and excessive violence are expressly forbidden in that section, other issues can be more complex and open to interpretation such as the get grandma to the hospital scenario. Still others could involve a younger character learning a life lesson from theft and other such scenarios exist that can make clean-cut ratings difficult. If of course the stories in question DO use the first scenario then YES by all means edit the heck out of it. This is a great idea, but the problem is that the story lacks focus. Everyone is just adding to it in crazy directions with some adult content thrown in. Although I guess its funny, it will never be a story. I suggest that the authors try their best to constrain it to the world of the story, and not have things like out of place items like possibly cell phones or celebrities, etc. (I am talking here about the non-adult stories.)
::I completely agree, but keep in mind that if you see something that doesn't belong, feel free to cut it out. Also all it takes is one person with the urge to create a focused storyline. Right now everyone is just putting in little peices just for the heck of it.

It could work as a setting definition for that story, and as a reference when editors weigh whether new additions to that story are appropriate or not. Unfortunately, I think you'll find a lot more adult-only sites out there than kid-friendly sites. It isn't necessary to categorize every page in a story. Having a status bar unique to that story serves pretty much the same function. But a category for templates is a good idea. --[[User:Platypus|Platypus]] 13:10, 9 February 2007 (EST)

Not every story needs a status bar, and then categories become useful. On another CYOA story wiki I use, categories are used to track stories, original authors of each thread, and such things as unfinished threads. Seems to work nicely. On my own editthis.info Wiki that I use for writing CYOA stories for another site (I was using my own PHPWiki on my own domain, but it was really slow) I add 'Category: Unfinished' to any page that I haven't finished yet. I know we've discussed categories before, and that some people have decided that it's unnecessary to put every page of a story in a category. I disagree, personally, I think that the current method is too unorganized, and when I see a page in recent changes, I can't tell what story it belongs to. So as a compromise, I'm going to start assigning categories to one story ([[Dead Kid]]) as a trial. If it works out well, we move on the next story. If it doesn't work out, well, it doesn't work out. I disagree. Although I do find it hard to tell what story certain pages go into (especially if no status bar was placed on the page), I don't think that categorys are needed for each story and individual page. I have recieved the follwing message whan trying to edit main page:

the word sex was not even written by me (in fcat I was just changing a 0 into a 5), but part of category descriptions, and if I were to try and delete all instnces of it, that would render one story unreadable. so... um... help?

And now, that story is becoming weird. I mean, first you're stranded on a desert island, and the next (if you choose the right path, of course)you come to a telephone booth where someone dropped their wallet. It would be best if the authors kept to the world of the story and didn't go overboard (this is also refering to a user who added pages like 'watch some TV' or 'go to the arcade' in [[Visiting the Zoo]]. Huh? We aren't objecting to the story. We are asking you, repeatedly, to please stop filling up the Recent Changes page by doing you edit-save-edit-save-edit routine. Use the Preview button and consider what you want the page to contain before saving it. Or better still, create an identity for yourself. Since ssr (Smutty Sex Romp) is such a HUGE story, I think it might be cool to have a section on it's main page where you can select certain areas in the "story" to go to. There are certain areas that are near impossible to go to once you have to start over, so this could be an optional thing for people who want to find somewhere quickly or start from a certain place. --[[User:Kazemawari]]

There are several options for finding specific areas. On the status bar, there's a spot for Location. Click on the location and you'll go to a brief description of it. From this description page, click on the category, which is Smutty Sex Romp Locations. This will take you to the index of all locations in the story. Click on any of them to get the description, and from that page, click on the left where it says 'what links here'. That will give you a list of pages in that location.

Don't worry too much. I'm the only active member with the power to ban people, and I only ban people for vandalism. I do appreciate it if you finish an individual page once you've started it. That is, it should include options so other writers can carry the story onward if you don't (unless the page is an ending), and should include the status bar/category from the previous page, as appropriate. You can always edit the page's contents later if you feel it needs more work.

You don't click the creat a wiki link to creat your adventure, you click to edit the section you wish, like kids stories, normal stories and that kind of stuff. Then once you edit it you can copy a story link there, and paste it were it goes. Then you change the name of that to your story. After that you click on hit to edit it.

I've considered doing that, but every now and then someone comes along and takes a story that's been sitting around going nowhere and turns it into something. That [[Harry Potter]] adventurer, for example, had only a few pages for the longest time and then people began adding to it. [[Rampage]] had about five barely readable pages until I re-wrote it in proper English and since then many others have added to it.

::Captcha is the only thing that has proven effective against link spammers, and so there isn't really any other choice, especially since this wiki is so popular. If it was turned off a link spammer would create an account, and an automatic process would be used to fill the wiki with spam. Link spammers were indeed a problem, but that problem ceased completely once I stopped allowing anonymous users to post. The captcha frequently bombs out, preventing new edits on pages with external links on them. Its existence has become far more annoying than the link spammers. *Irony RARELY needs to be pointed out. == Site's acting wierd ==
The last two or three days I've tried accessing this site I've occasionally gotten MySql errors relating to login. Only the error message shows up, and I can't view the main page or any other pages. When I actually do get on, pages load unusually slowly. Is there some maintenance going on or something? Is anyone else getting these errors, or is the problem on my end?

== some old ideas ==

i used to be really into making choose your own adventures, and have some ideas others might want to use or w/e. If you have an idea of a map u wanna make, make each room or place you can stand a new page, then link them together, so the player can explore freely without each option simply branching off to two others until the player wins or loses. This system i found leads to more in depth player options.
Also with the system above, you can have a full day and night cycle, where you split the day into a few segments (eg. morning, evening, night) then rewrite the entire world for each segment, then whenever you have the option to wait or sleep or whatever, the time of day changes one over, into the same spot your standing at. This way you can have a village or whatever, but have people sleeping and shopping at different times, giving the world a little more life.

:I think the simpler approach to backtracking and such may be a lot easier from the writing standpoint. The problem, however, is that you throw out all possibilities of RPG elements, like equipment and life and levels, unless it's crucial to the story, and you can't back up after acquiring one of them. Or you can re-write the entire world every time you want to reflect one of those changes. Adding on the re-writes for each time period would make it hit cataclysmic levels of complexion, and would ''only'' make sense to implement if you had a java-based method of delivering CYOA stories, so you could simply store those variables in the RAM to access when needed.

:I could see this method being useful for, just an example, re-creating The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. In that game, there were different events only accessible at certain times of day, and you would go back in time, repeating (I think it was) 3 days over and over, but bringing your key items back with you to the start, allowing progress through the game. But, again, including each possible item at each possible time would either require a ''ton'' of re-writing, or the beforementioned java-based delivery method for CYOA. Now, I realize that I've been away for a couple months, so I wouldn't have been surprised to find any number of the stories I started in the Pit (though I guess I should have been, considering the policies regarding the Pit? I recently noticed that about 10 new stories were made, and each of them looked like they should be in the 10+ section. How is stealing a car family friendly? Or discouraging school? Seriously, If I see one more story like that being made, it's going straight to PG-13.

Adenster, family-friendly is generally a relative term. While I dont know the particular stories you speak of, discouraging school or stealing a car CAN be used in a family setting IE. one character has a Huckleberry Finn-ish tendency to skip school and the car can be used as a life lesson piece. Terms like Family-Friendly vary greatly from person to person and are entirely dependent on perception. For example some people believe in spanking their children whilst others dont. One side would consider it "Family-Friendly" whilst the other group would not. Generally if things such as car-stealing or such occur it can be acceptable if put in perspective and used in the context of the story. --[[User:BFEL|BFEL]] 12:13, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

I'm kind of a perfectionist and it just hurts my eyes to see the story page links not formatted properly. It's either because people are too lazy or just not well enough informed on how to create proper links. Most pages have something like this:

There is no real problem or rule against editing pages, especially grammar correction. If you want to fix stories then that’s alright. Hell, even adding new stuff to the story is fine in most cases.
The problem with this site is that there are some users who create crappy stories with five pages that have no real plot or proper grammar. People work on their story for a day then leave resulting in many poor stories with no real purpose. So if you want to fix stories then go for it.

Unfortunately, there are far too many ungrammatical writers out there for me to repair all the things they post. I am the only active sysop here, and I don't object to anyone trying fix grammar around the site. We were recently invaded by a Canadian school whose students wanted the thrill of posting on the web despite the fact that many of them had a poor grasp of English. Their teacher's help made many things worse, not better. The page-moving function had to be disabled due to malicious vandals. However, what you can do is copy the text in the mis-named page, blank that page, edit the page with the mis-named link, and paste the text onto a new page with the correctly spelled name. Then I'll delete the blanked page. I'm the only one who can do deletions. After your graduation you decided to join the elite fighting force of mages, the royal battlemages who serve under the royalty of your country. After the recommendations that the college of magi sent, you had no trouble joining. You found the battlemages to be everything you had hoped they would be. Fierce warriors, skilled spellcasters, and all with a cause worthy of respect. Within your second week of service the prince himself learned of your exceptional abilities and offered a position directly under him. Such a position is generally reserved for members who spend years or even decades of service within the forces of your country so you naturally accepted.

This particular branch you soon found was less devoted to the needs of your country and was instead devoted entirely to the prince himself. Your first task in your new position was to kill a group of peasants who had angered the prince in some way or another. It quickly became clear that you were little more than the princes personal troupe of assassins and enforcers, a far dirtier task then you had imagined in your idealist fantasys. Your fellows helped you get through the guilt and shame however and you soon fell into a comraderie with them. This was where you first saw the dark arts of necromancy firsthand. A noble who disapproved of the princes strongarming was preparing an army of mercenaries to lead an assault on the princes estate and your unit was dispatched to deal with the problem. You, in your relative inexperience were unconvinced that a few battlemages could defeat a small army. That is when your comrade showed you that he could raise his own army, one that feels no pain or fear, one that knows only obedience. He took you to a local graveyard and began raising the dead straight from the very ground, and the numerical advantage of your enemies quickly dwindled.

Needless to say, you and your troupe slaughtered them. When one of them would fall to your spells or the claws of the undead, your comrade would raise their corpse to fight former allies. When all was said and done, not only had your unit defeated this little force of assassins but sent them back to destroy their former employer. When news reached the nobility, all the princes detractors fell quiet and complacent within a day. The years you spent within your service were much the same throughout and killing, fearmongering and torture soon became almost normal to you. Eventually however you tired of the princes service and you considered the options you now had before you. You were given a opportunity to move into the direct service of the king himself instead and it looked to be a much less gruesome task then providing his son your services. You also considered that you could use the considerable sum of money that you had accrued over the years of service to start your own company of elite mercenaries.

Your teenage years were spent apprenticing to a bitter old mage who, in many students oppinions, knew far too many ways to maim or kill them. He was a veteran of many wars in which the nobles of the land had called on mercenaries to resolve their disputes. He later settled down and decided teaching his skills was a good way to avoid bankruptcy as he was too old for battle. On the first day he taught all his students a shield spell and proceded to lob powerful fireballs in all directions. Any who failed to hold their barrier not only ended up going to the healers class to treat the burns but also were refused his tutelage.

Over the years he showed his pupils many, many ways to both survive the attacks of their enemies and how to counter with brutal efficiency that left the clearings where the class was eventually moved to (due to rooms of the college..exploding..)
scorched and untraversable. You proved to be one of the most promising students in the class due to your eagerness to learn and your eventual friendship of the veteran mage who taught you everything of battle.

When the students graduated from the class and college, each member of your class was a extraordinarily skilled combatant, capable of both personal and large-scale combat tactics backed by powerful arcane abilities. Unfortunatly your friend and master died before your graduation, leaving you alone to ponder your next step. You could choose to follow in his footsteps as a mercenary, hiring yourself out to those that could afford your services. You might also join the forces of the king as a royal battlemage, or choose instead to strike out as a solitary adventurer.

If you have an idea for a story, you might like to try [[Idea Pitches|pitching your idea to other users]] and seeing how interested people might be in playing your story, what you could do to make playing your story fun, and who might be interested in collaborating with you to write it. ==Creating a Story==
If you have an idea for a story, you might like to try [[Idea Pitches|pitching your idea to other users]] and seeing how interested people might be in playing your story, what you could do to make playing your story fun, and who might be interested in collaborating with you to write it. Once you have done that, you can create it by entering your desired name for the Story into the search box and clicking '''Go'''. If the name has not already been taken, click this exact title to start the story. There are three general types of story. The first is the branching-plot story (an example of this is the Choose Your Own Adventure series of gamebooks), which require the reader to make choices but are otherwise like a regular novel. The second type is the role-playing game adventure, which combines the branching-plot novel with simple role-playing rules such as attack points and monster battles. The third type is the trivia quiz, where the player must answer questions as if they were on a game show.

The next to the last line here is the ''status indicator''. The status indicator shown here is the ''basic'' status indicator. Different stories use different status indicators, and some use none at all. Look at the edit screen for the page you're starting from and copy that status indicator to the new page you're adding. Modify as necessary.

Every page should have the category at the bottom. This keeps track of all the pages in the story. You can copy the category line from the previous page to the one you're working on. The category, obviously, is ''never'' 'name of story you're working on'. You type in the actual name of the story.

People have a tendency to create branches where the character dies. To prevent the story from being just a tree with all dead ends:
*For each page where you kill the player's character, you must create at least 2 pages (with content) where s/he can go on.
*Please stick to the theme and setting of the story, and discuss ideas for major changes on the discussion pages. Although creativity is encouraged, radical plot changes and inconsistencies will ruin the flow.
*If something is off topic, remove it.
*Try to capitalize and spell your words correctly.
