"Alright, Hazael, but make sure the cargo bay is secure first." 

Twenty minutes later, Hazael calls you back. 
"Commander, the captive told us that he is part of a pirate boarding party. They got separated from their carrier when the ''Nebulous'' escaped an attack by the main pirate ships. Since then they have been trying to kill off the ship's crew whilst keeping a low profile. The aim is to eventually take over the ship and fly it back to a secret outpost. These little black ships," he gestures towards them in the cargo bay, "are theirs and they have been helping themselves to the contents of the food containers. This was their base and when they discovered us panic struck. So they foolishly tried to attack. There are about twenty of them, he says." 

You digest this information. Should you focus on the pirates or try and ignore them?
"For now, just focus on finding the crew and working out what is wrong with the ship. If you happen to meet any pirates, deal with them." You'll have to wait for a good chance, as the ship is so large it could take days to ferret them out. 
"The most pressing thing," you continue, "is to change the ship's course to a place with repair facilities. I recommend you head for the command centre." 
"Understood. Sozin out." Time passes. 

"Hello, I gather you are the commander of this mission." A middle aged lady is calling you via Hazael's comms. "I am Lieutenant Drusilla, acting captain of the ''Nebulous''. Pirates damaged our ship and we are out of fuel. We are greatly indebted to you for mounting this rescue operation." 
"Ah, so you have been drifting because you have no fuel." That explains that then. You can use the extra fuel supplies on board the ''Jarif''. "We are able to supply you with fuel. Will you be happy to set a course for our space station the ''Myleon''? Once there we can repair your ship." 
"Well, under the circumstances, I don't have a lot of choice." Odd, it sounds like she doesn't really want to. Perhaps she is suspicious of something. 
"Excellent. Kij," you address your assistant, "start preparations for transfering fuel. Lieutenant, have you had any luck tracking down those pirates on your ship?" 
"No, commander." She sighs. "I have trouble even persuading the others that there are pirates on this ship. They all seem superstitious about the deaths and disappearances of the captain and others, or insist that one of us must have done it."

After careful consideration, you summon Nern and Sozin on a conference call. 
"I'm inclined to think that Lt. Drusilla is tired and paranoid. You didn't find any evidence of pirates did you, Captain Nern?" 
"Not directly, although there were the fighters." 
"I imagine those are just part of the cargo, but the crew don't want to admit that they were transporting state of the art fighters."
You continue, "Meanwhile, the crew probably started to split into factions when they found that they were drifting helplessly in space. They would have started to look for food and weapons. Until rescue appeared their society would have been degenerating into violence and disorder. So it is not surprising that there were some crew members in an isolated group that we did not find. Now they are no doubt trying to set course to their original destination, Luz." 
Your captains agree with your analysis. 

You hail the ‘’Nebulous’’. A bald man with steely eyes appears. 
“Greetings. Whom do I have the delight of meeting?” You ask cordially. 
“Major Og. What happened to the rest of the crew?” 
Using all the tact you can muster, “there seems to have been a small misunderstanding. Some of the crew had assembled at the bridge where my captain, Lucinha Nern, found them. We thought everyone was there, so they were evacuated to one of our ships. You must feel terribly let down. I am extremely sorry.” 
“Hrrumph. Well perhaps you can tell me where in the galaxy we are.” 
“You have entered the Local Group. We are heading towards the ‘’Myleon’’ space station. There we can repair your ship. If you would kindly revert to the course we set, we will be there in less than 24 hours.” 
The Major is persuaded, but insists on staying on the ‘’Nebulous’’. This makes you slightly uneasy, but the rest of the journey passes without incident.

You ask Lucinha Nern to organise the questioning of all the senior staff from the Nebulous to see if they really got everyone off the ship. Assuming that there is no-one aboard her, the Nebulous must have a technical fault. Otherwise 'someone' must have changed the course.

"Captain Sozin, watch out for an attack. I doubt that old thing has much firepower, but she attacks I want you to disable her." Captain Hazael Sozin, a serious man in his late thirties, nods confirmation. "Sozin out."

"Commander," Lucinha begins, "the three remaining senior staff give differing versions of events. Would you like to listen to recordings of their answers?"
"Yes, please."
"OK, first we have Lieutenant Drusilla, acting captain of the Nebulous." A middle aged lady appears on the display, looking straight at the camera. She is wearing formal clothing and appears tired.

"In summary, we were attacked by several ships. We escaped, but not before three fighters had managed to board the ship. We never found their pilots. Some members of the crew have gone missing or been killed. We believe that the fighters were pirates coming aboard. They have then been picking off our crew, including the captain. I thank the Lord that you came to get us off that ship."

The screen flashes back to Lucinha. "Next we have First Engineer Pob." Surprisingly young for such a senior officer, Pob looks nervous and wears a stained jacket and well worn trousers [pants].

"To summarise? Well, I told you, we were attacked. We took critical hits to our weapons systems so we used all our available fuel to get away. We sent out distress signals for a while until the entire comms system just conked out. Umm.. then there was confusion. People got scared and some of the leaders had a disagreement. Once order was restored we did a register and several people were missing. We also found the captain and his deputy dead in an office. It looks like they shot each other at the same time."

"Finally, Senior comms officer Mhaw-Lamb." This is a plump, comfortable looking man. He is wearing casual clothing and is probably slightly younger than Lt. Drusilla.

Alright, so we were attacked and managed to escape. I was sending out distress signals and my staff were nursing the comms system. Two main nodes were damaged in the attack, you know? Anyway, what can you do, the whole system crashed and the engineers said no way were they going all the way to the other side of the ship to fix the nodes; they were pretty much scared of the dark, I say. Then somebody came up to me and said, hey, the captain's dead! And some other people. Now I wonder if someone deliberately overloaded the system so that the captain couldn't call for help. And then you fellas turned up."

You arrange for fuel to be delivered from the ''Jarif'''s spare supplies to the ''Nebulous''. Captain Nern and her crew set the ship on auto and take all the known crew and passengers through to the ''Claud''. After everything is done, the ''Claud'' disengages and the ''Nebulous'' begins its slow acceleration towards ''Myleon''. 

Mission hour 62: you are a quarter of the way back and the ''Nebulous'' has just shown signs of alterting course. What's going on?!

After a time, "Commander," Lucinha begins, “No one seems to know how the latest casualty occurred. The three remaining senior staff give differing versions of events. Would you like to listen to recordings of their answers?" 
"Yes, please." 
"OK, first we have Lieutenant Drusilla, acting captain of the ''Nebulous''." A middle aged lady appears on the display, looking straight at the camera. She is wearing formal clothing and appears tired.

"Just keep him under guard for now. Our priority is to find the crew." 

Half an hour later you receive a call from Hazael. He can't suppress a grin. 
"Good news, commander. My search party almost immediately stumbled upon the rest of the group that attacked us. There are fifteen of them in total." His face turns down slightly. "Although they quickly gave up, Officer Maygr Bvon was killed. He was a most humble man, always ready to put himself in the firing line to save others." 
"This is sad news indeed," you empathise, "but it is an unexpected pleasure that you overtook those scoundrels. Did you find the crew?" 
"Yes, they were all concentrated at the bridge. The rogue group that we caught had been conducting a guerrilla war against them, almost all civilians you see, and they were living in a state of terror. We are taking them aboard the ''Mortis'' now. The ''Nebulous'' is out of fuel, they tell us, and if you could oblige with some reserve fuel from the ''Jarif'' we could simply direct her back to the ''Myleon''." 
"Agreed. Excellent work, Captain Sozin. Wait until we get back to base before holding the funeral for that man, Bvon I think you said, I'm sure his relatives will want to grieve." 

Shortly you are heading back to the ''Myleon'' space station. What sort of reception awaits you?

A while later Hazael Sozin calls you to report. 
"Commander, there are a lot of food crates. Some of them have been broken into, but the food is still fresh so it can't have been long ago. Most of the rest is made up of a variety of manufactured good and luxuries. Probably a valuable haul overall." 
"Nothing contraband?" You enquire. 
"No, it all seems to be good, legal stuff. No weapons that we've found. Excuse me a moment ..." an aid has a hurried, whispered conversation with Hazael. "I've just been informed that my men were attacked. We beat off the attackers easily, but two of my men were injured. We have apprehended one of the scoundrels. We think that they were trying to get to the fighters." 
"Good work. Is it a crew member?" 
"No, he doesn't even seem to know what ship he's on. But he won't answer our questions. He says he is from Bethaven, not one of the closer colonies. Should we interrogate him?" 

That probably means torture this guy. Apart from the moral implications, maybe you should just send out an exploration party to find the actual crew of the ''Nebulous''. Extracting information could take too much time.

==Creating a Story==
If you have an idea for a story, you might like to try [[Idea Pitches|pitching your idea to other users]] and seeing how interested people might be in playing your story, what you could do to make playing your story fun, and who might be interested in collaborating with you to write it. Once you have done that, you can create it by entering your desired name for the Story into the search box and clicking '''Go'''. If the name has not already been taken, click this exact title to start the story. There are three general types of story. The first is the branching-plot story (an example of this is the Choose Your Own Adventure series of gamebooks), which require the reader to make choices but are otherwise like a regular novel. The second type is the role-playing game adventure, which combines the branching-plot novel with simple role-playing rules such as attack points and monster battles. The third type is the trivia quiz, where the player must answer questions as if they were on a game show.

Leaving Kij in charge, you take a small team on one of the fighters. You also send the other two back with pilots only to bring more crew back. 

As you enter the cargo bay the scene is one of confusion. Some people are running around and there are a dozen or so bodies lying about. You collar the nearest person. 
"We were attacked! Everyone has been waiting for the fighters to come back, then someone started shooting at the crowd, and everyone just panicked! Please help us!" 
"Right, gather up some people and get them on board the other fighters. Meanwhile, Jenks, come with me." Jenks is a guard. "Which way did the shots come from?" 
"Over there, I think." The vague gesturing doesn't particularly help you, but you set off anyway. 

Entering the spaceship proper, you see a map. Studying it, you decide to head for the bridge. The command center will show you the status of the ship. As you are propelled along the corridors by a kind of flat escalator, you hear a noise like someone running. A man, looking terrified, appears ahead of you and holds a laser gun at you with a trembling hand. Jenks responds in kind, but you quickly defuse the situation. 
"Hello there, we're friends. Are you running from someone?" 
"Yes! They're everywhere. I ran from the cargo bay and there was someone shooting at me. So I just kept running." 
"Well, you should head back to the cargo bay and see if there are any fighters left to take you to safety. Or you could come with us. You know the ship; we don't." 
"Who are you?" You explain briefly. "OK, I'm Hesmi, a passenger travelling to Luz." 'Well you're well off course, then,' you think to yourself. 

On arrival at the bridge, you see a couple of people there. Hesmi identifies them as crew of the ''Nebulous''. They are talking quietly, and seem to be trying to get something to work.

You ask Lucinha Nern to organise the questioning of all the senior staff from the ''Nebulous'' to see if they really got everyone off the ship. Assuming that there is no-one aboard her, the ''Nebulous'' must have a technical fault. Otherwise 'someone' must have changed the course. 

"Captain Sozin, watch out for an attack. I doubt that old thing has much firepower, but she attacks I want you to disable her." Captain Hazael Sozin, a serious man in his late thirties, nods confirmation. "Sozin out." 

"Commander," Lucinha begins, "the three remaining senior staff give differing versions of events. Would you like to listen to recordings of their answers?" 
"Yes, please." 
"OK, first we have Lieutenant Drusilla, acting captain of the ''Nebulous''." A middle aged lady appears on the display, looking straight at the camera. She is wearing formal clothing and appears tired. 

"In summary, we were attacked by several ships. We escaped, but not before three fighters had managed to board the ship. We never found their pilots. Some members of the crew have gone missing or been killed. We believe that the fighters were pirates coming aboard. They have then been picking off our crew, including the captain. I thank the Lord that you came to get us off that ship." 

The screen flashes back to Lucinha. "Next we have First Engineer Pob." Surprisingly young for such a senior officer, Pob looks nervous and wears a stained jacket and well worn trousers [pants]. 

"To summarise? Well, I told you, we were attacked. We took critical hits to our weapons systems so we used all our available fuel to get away. We sent out distress signals for a while until the entire comms system just conked out. Umm.. then there was confusion. People got scared and some of the leaders had a disagreement. Once order was restored we did a register and several people were missing. We also found the captain and his deputy dead in an office. It looks like they shot each other at the same time." 

"Finally, Senior comms officer Mhaw-Lamb." This is a plump, comfortable looking man. He is wearing casual clothing and is probably slightly younger than Lt. Drusilla. 

Alright, so we were attacked and managed to escape. I was sending out distress signals and my staff were nursing the comms system. Two main nodes were damaged in the attack, you know? Anyway, what can you do, the whole system crashed and the engineers said no way were they going all the way to the other side of the ship to fix the nodes; they were pretty much scared of the dark, I say. Then somebody came up to me and said, hey, the captain's dead! And some other people. Now I wonder if someone deliberately overloaded the system so that the captain couldn't call for help. And then you fellas turned up."

"Kij," you radio back to your ship, "find us some explosives. Frankly, I don't trust these decon units." A few minutes later a man and two women appear carrying some small Vas explosives and begin setting them up. 

Everyone goes back to the ''Jarif'' and in a couple of minutes there is a shudder as you feel the shock of the explosion coming through the airlock where the two ships are docked. So, once more into the breach ... 

Thankfully, the explosion didn't block the way in. There are sirens wailing and you adjust your ear piece to exactly neutralise the deafening noise. Stepping over bits of metal and shards of plastic, you observe that the explosion has made a hole in the floor. 
"Well I never!" Remarks one of the engineers. "There's the main reactor!" 
Looking through that hole, you and your party can see what appears to be the housing of the main reactor. A strange place to have the reactor - even you realise that.

You order your senior engineer to open the ''Jarif'''s small hanger for the small ships to land. They could be escape shuttles for all you know. You are watching a live feed of the hanger, with a large number of guards and other personnel gathered, as they coast in. The first capsule opens and about a dozen people, tightly packed in, pour out. They cheer and embrace the shocked guards who have gone over to meet them. While they are chatting excitedly, the other ships follow suit. 

The ''Jarif'''s function room is brightly lit by a fluorescant strip that runs around the top of the room in an oval. The walls merge with the ceiling to make a kind of dome effect. You are seated in a comfortable armchair across from a lady in her late forties, you guess, who has a stern countenance. However, she seems emotionally exhausted. 
"About a week ago we were attacked by a number of large ships of unknown origin. We presume that they were pirates, although we never found out what they wanted. We were getting battered so we used up all our remaining fuel in a bid to escape. To our surprise, they declined to chase us much, but we were left drifting. However, before we got away some fighters managed to get into one of the cargo bays." You continue to listen intently. 
"Our comms network was dying due to the damage we sustained. Thanks be to God, you picked up our distress calls and came! Whoever, or ''whatever'', was on those fighters has been occasionally picking off our crew! Eventually everyone got together at the bridge for safety. When we detected your ships, we all headed for the cargo bay with the fighters. There are still about twice as many people left at the cargo bay as are here. We need to send the fighters back to pick them up and bring them to safety."

The ''Claud'', which specialises in scanning, starts beaming across visuals during mission hour 38. The ''Nebulous'', as it is called, is a large interstellar cargo ship. It has damage to its external hull. Captain Sozin of the ''Mortis'' contacts you. The ''Mortis'' specialises in combat ability. 
"Commander, we are detecting an active shield around the ''Nebulous''. They must be suspicious of us. We are ready to respond if they do anything hostile." 
"Commander," Khapp appears on the other side of the comm screen. "We can't pick anything up from the ship. They are only transmitting noise (static) over all comms frequencies. Additionally, one of their cargo bay doors is opening." Beside Khapp, Captain Nuwhet appears. There is a faint trace of red around his eyes, but he looks in a much better state than he was. 
"Captain Nuwhet here, requesting permission to resume command of the ''Claud''." Khapp frowns. He hadn't seen Nuwhet come up from behind him.

"Order Nuwhet on board." Kij senses a little irritation in your voice. He leaves a slightly shorter pause than normal before motioning to the attendant to get Nuwhet to his ship. "Get me Khapp," you order the computer. 'At least computers don't get drunk' you think. 

"First Engineer Khapp reporting, sir!" 
"Khapp, you are promoted to temporary captain of the ''Claud'' until Nuwhet is fit to resume." 
With a look of surprise Khapp salutes you. "Thank you, sir!" 

When the ships are almost ready to depart, you call up the captains. "Khapp, Sozin, we are shortly going to embark on a mission to aid a distressed ship just outside LG space. I will need your full backing. Are you with me?" 
"Yes, commander," Sozin is immediate. Khapp, unused to the protocol, mumbles "yes sir" a second later. 
"Good, launch when ready. The ''Jarif'' will be departing in three minutes." 

After 32 hours Khapp reports that the target ship has just been spotted on their long range scanners. You are nearly there!

When the ''Jarif'' and the ''Casket'' have docked, the ''Casket'' also seals onto the ''Nebulous''' main port. It only just avoids a jagged bit of metal protruding from the damaged hull of the ''Nebulous''. You lead your team through the airlocks and enter a large reception lounge. An automatic reception video starts playing. 
"Welcome aboard the ''Nebulous''. The crew wish you a safe and pleasant journey to planet Luz."
Wow! Luz is not in the LG - of the colonies, it is one of the nearest neighbours - this ship is really off course! Also, it seems that they have passengers. You pass through a decontamination chamber, which insists on spraying you with some kind of disinfectant, and wait for the others. Ahead there is a long corridor curving to the left. To your immediate left there is a door that says 'new arrivals'. As you turn to see Jude come through, you think you glimpse a fleeting shadow at the end of the corridor, which is lit by a fluorescant ceiling. Ammiel the engineer is the last to come through.

"Captain Nern, you were right. The ''Jarif'' is knocking against some twisted metal jutting out of the hull not far from the port, stopping us from making a connection. However, I believe that the ''Claud'', being smaller, will be able to avoid this and dock. So I am asking you to dock and lead a party onto the ''Nebulous''. Your primary objective will be to find out the status of the ship. How much damage, how many people on board, etc. The secondary objectives are to fix their comms, redirect the ship and aid the inhabitants. Are you willing to undertake this mission?" 
Nern considers this. After all, this is her first time in charge and now you are asking her to save the ''Nebulous''! 
"Alright, commander, I'll go. I must admit, I don't know my crew too well. Who shall I take with me?" 
"Just ask the senior officers from each relevant department to recommend two staff." You feel the need to offer some encouragement. "Think of it as a team building exercise. If you are successful, you'll be a hero." 

It is mission hour 46 and your senior comms officer announces that a transmission is being received from the ''Nebulous''!
"Captain Lucinha Nern here. Do you read? Is anyone reading me?"

"Captain Sozin, please move towards the ''Nebulous''." The name is visible on the side of the ship you are viewing with Kij on a large display. You see a red splodge enter the screen - the ''Mortis''. It sidles up to the much larger ''Nebulous'' and slows to a stop. Sozin comes on the screen. 
"Commander, I don't think we can dock with the ''Nebulous''. There is too much damage to her main port. May I investigate her cargo bays?" 
"Go ahead, captain," you affirm. 

"Commander, one of the cargo bay doors is not securely fastened shut. We have equipment on board that we could use to open it. Shall I give the order?" 
"Absolutely." You bring up Captain Nern on the other screen. "Captain Nern, please position the ''Claud'' to provide an immediate analysis of what is in that cargo bay. If you see anything hostile, you have my permission to give the order to Captain Sozin to fire." 
"Thank you, commander, I'm on my way." 

Watching the visual feed from the ''Claud'', you see two arms projecting from the ''Mortis''. It looks rather like a red bug with antennae. The antennae reach into a crack between the ''Nebulous''' cargo doors and begin to retract, pulling the door open. There doesn't seem to be much resistance. The ''Claud'' is shining a high intensity beam of light at it, and you get a first glimpse of what is inside. There is a black object - no, two - stationery down there. There are various large containers, some of them damaged. As the door is fully opened you see that the black objects are small fighter planes. There is no sign of life, though. The ''Mortis'' proceeds to open the other door. There is more freight and another black fighter on that side. 

"Shall I send some of my men down there?" Hazael Sozin asks. 
"Yes," you reply, " and tell them to focus on ...

"Commander, the ship is called the ''Nebulous''. It is a cargo ship, about 120 - 130 years old. It is much bigger than our ships. There is considerable damage to its hull, including around its main port. You won't be able to dock at that port. The shields seem to be operational. The only transmissions we get are noise across all frequencies, although there is some evidence to suggest that its main reactor is working from certain fluctuations in the noise. The only other thing of interest is that one of the cargo bay doors seems to have been opened in the recent past, maybe a week ago."

The door seals and a blue light fills the room.
"Scanning, scanning for hazards," crackles a voice. "Obstruction detected. Please remove your protective suit." You obey. "Unknown biological activity detected. Dispensing Gulry spray." A fine spray fills the pod and makes you sneeze repeatedly until the door on the other side of the pod opens to let you out. You stumble out and are confronted by your party. 

“Commander, we have stumbled upon their main reactor. I think we should investigate that first, since it is close by,” advises your chief scientist. 

An engineer disagrees. “I’ve found a map node that can show us the way to the control centre. We should go there immediately and run the ship’s diagnostics. We can’t fix anything until we know what is wrong.”

One of the engineers surmises that this unit, the first one as you come in, had been used so much that it would have been the first to fail. You hail the ''Jarif'', the nearest ship. 
"Is everything alright, commander?" Kij is clearly surprised to see you again so soon. 
"There are three fighters heading for us. Haven't you picked them up yet?" You gesture impatiently. "I want you to shoot them." Kij pauses so you add, "Now!" Then he turns to his secondary comms unit and speaks to the weapons officer on duty, who you recognise as Officer Fouton. 

The energy weapons seem to ignite space with their intense beams. The three mystery fighters dance between them like flies avoiding shafts of sunlight in a dense jungle. Beneath are pools of blue where the ''Nebulous''' shields soak up the shots. They are getting closer. One of them unleashes a brief volley of shots at you before it has to maneuver away again. It's not looking good. 

Your pilot is just adjusting for the final approach to the port when he yanks the pod upward. A flash of orange misses you by metres. Now the three craft are swarming around you. You never get a chance to dock with the ''Nebulous''. This is ...

"Commander, there they are!" Your science officer spots a glint of light above the horizon of the enormous cargo ship. Everyone is very tense. It is too late to ask Kij to shoot them. You are at the mercy of these unknown entities. 

One of them comes along side your shuttle. The comms unit lights up with a plain text message that says, "Please open your hatch and allow us to come aboard."

You address the messenger. "Tell Officer Fouton to wait until we are nearly at the limit of our weaponry range. Until then, stop firing and just charge all the weapons up. Try and spend as little energy on the shields as possible, without letting them severely damage the ''Jarif''. Then concentrate all our fire in a sudden burst aimed at their main reactors." 
"Yes sir!" The man retreats from the bridge. You await the outcome of your risky stratagem. 

Twenty minutes later you have taken your mind off the situation with some light reading. Your thoughts are interrupted by a sudden shaking through the whole ship. You do not need to be told that the ''Mortis'' has finally penetrated your shields. You make an emergency announcement over the ship's comms to all staff. 
"Faithful men and women of the ''Jarif'', do not lose heart. We will come through this shortly. All staff not involved in comnbat operations should make their way immediately to the reinforced section 5. Be courageous. Officer Fouton, accelerate our plans." 

Fouton comes up on the comms. "Commander, it worked! It seems like Captain Sozin lowered the ''Mortis'''s shields. When our focussed attack hit them, the ''Mortis'' blew up!" A recording of the event is shown. The ''Mortis'' looks like a red fish, but without fins or tail. A flash eminates from a spot near where the eye would be, as the ''Mortis'' fires on you. Then a great flash impacts it just off centre, slightly to the rear. A blue light shows where the shields are repulsing the impact. However, an orange ripple spreads out from the same spot, showing that the main reactor on the ''Mortis'' has been penetrated. Then there is a graceful, silent explosion as the fish seems to expand and change colour to grey - orange, before completely fragmenting. 
"Good work Fouton. I knew that when Sozin thought we were just trying to escape, he would put all his energy into destroying us before we could get away, lowering his shields to do so. Now, Officer Fouton, I grant you the honour of announcing our victory to the crew." 

After you have savoured your victory, you must decide what to do next.

"Change of plan, Jurden. We need to reach that poor ship as fast as possible. I want you to increase our speed as much as possible." 
"Commander, our fuel reserves will be reduced to a 25% safety margin. Will the ''Mortis'' be needing more fuel as well?" 
"Don't worry about Sozin. He and I have had a slight disagreement and I expect that we will get there well ahead of them. 

You bring up the combat hub on screen. Four of your crew are playing cards around a small, poorly lit table.
"This is your commander speaking." They jump out of their skins - they hadn't been expecting any action until you reach the distressed ship. "Captain Sozin and the ''Mortis'' have mutinied and, regrettably, we now have to defend ourselves against them." 
"Yes, commander!" Officer Fouton replies. 
"If you can fire within two minutes I shall overlook your improper activities." 

Twenty minutes into the fight the ''Jarif'' is starting to pull away from the ''Mortis'', but your energy reserves are draining rapidly. These power the shields, weaponry and essential systems (other things like external communications have been switched off). The ''Mortis'' isn't showing any sign of weakening. Officer Fouton has sent a man to you at the bridge to request further instructions. 

He asks, "Would you like to take a defensive approach and concentrate on our shields or an aggressive approach and concentrate on attack?" 

You ask the computer to simulate these two approaches. It suggests that concentrating on shields gives you a 50% chance of survival provided you can outrun them, compared to a 25% chance of destroying the ''Mortis'' if you concentrate on attack.

After everyone else has used that decon unit the screen shows 19/20. When you approach, though, a light flashes on it showing that it is out of the Gulry spray needed for removing certain virus particles. It refuses to decontaminate you (not that there is anything wrong with you, it just thinks there is).

"Well, it's called the ''Nebulous'', and it's banged up good and proper. I think you're going to have problems docking the ''Jarif'' to its main port, commander." 
"Hmm.. are there any other ways we could get aboard?" 
"Well, I reckon that one of their minor ports would just about fit one of your minor ports. It's right around the other side." 
"Excellent, good work Khapp, you're a fine engineer." 

Once the ''Jarif'' has maneuvered around to a small port, the pilots figure out how to create the seal that will allow you to go aboard the ''Nebulous''. This is it! You take twenty staff - comms experts, engineers, medical staff etc and cross over to the mysterious cargo ship. 

You step from the depressurisation chamber to the reception chamber of the ''Nebulous''. The room is long and thin like a corridor, but where the walls would be are two banks of decontamination units. These will assess incoming people for diseases known to it, dangerous chemicals and radiation. There is a wall at the far end, bare except for an old intercom. The place looks disused and dirty. One of your engineers picks up a loose piece of pipe on the floor whilst another inspects the outside of a decontamination chamber. There doesn't seem to be an alternative way in. Comms expert Sappre can't get the old fashioned intercom to work.

"Commander, might I recommend Communications Officer Lucinha Nern? She is currently training to be a ship's captain under Captain Rohr. She has shown excellent potential." 
'Hmm.. so she hasn't got any experience on any of my ships' you think. A quick and accurate decision is required - your ships leave in one hour.

"Sozin, Nern, stay about 20 miles out. The ''Jarif'' is going in to investigate. We intend to send in a party to try and make contact. Nern, what can you tell me about the ship?" 
"We are analysing the data coming through now, commander. So far we have ascertained that it is the ''Nebulous'', a cargo ship that is perhaps a hundred years old. There is damage to its hull, including around its main port. This may cause problems in docking the ''Jarif''. We have been unable to contact them - all we are getting is noise across all communications frequencies." 

The ''Jarif'' approaches. Your pilots attempt to create a seal with the ''Nebulous''' main port, but are unable to. The twisted metal around the port is obstructing the ''Jarif'' from getting close enough. Now the ''Claud'' is smaller and could probably squeeze in. However, you could more easily use one of the escape shuttles aboard the ''Jarif'' to hop across to one of the minor ports on the ''Nebulous''. The problem with that is that escape shuttles are only intended to be single use, so if your people can't fix her, you might be stuck on the ''Nebulous''.

Re: [[Alien Adventure]] I read it and I have some negative and some positive comments. I'm a Christian, and the story seems to focus on sexual organs and sex too much for me. That said, it is well written and has some good creative ideas (I especially liked the laser gun concept). I don't feel comfortable writing that kind of 'adult' stuff though, sorry. One question - is it meant to be serious, or tongue in cheek? It seems to start off fairly serious.

*Well, I '''did''' say it was in the Adult section. I intended it to be serious, but I haven't looked at it for a while, so I'm not sure what direction others may have taken it in. Fantastical is one thing, but sometimes people here add story brnaches that jump into the realm of ridiculous (read: worthy of ridicule) because they are, as noted earlier, mentally deficient children. Sometimes I feel like I can really expand a chunk of someone else's story, but in the case of AiS, I just enjoy watching the story unfold, (with limited audience participation.) Despite your feeling that it is the wrong thing, you respect Phogison and content yourself with waiting. During that time you attend a formal dinner, release a statement to the press, and frequently check whether there have been any further transmissions. Nothing is detected, except static, from the ship. It turns out to be a largish cargo vessel, by the name of the ''Nebulous''. 

There is a lot of media attention. A leading relious figure appears on the news one night and gives a prophecy that only trouble will come out of the ''Nebulous''. It comes as something of a surprise, but the public mood seems fairly hostile to this ship because it is 'from one of the other colonies, and is probably just a bunch of refugees and/or salesmen'. They may also be influenced by the infamous pirate attack 23 years ago. 

Finally the day to blast off arrives. Your ship, the ''Jarif'', is joined by Captain Rohr's ship, ''Casket'' (with good medical facilities) and Captain Sozin's ship, ''Mortis'' (in case they are hostile). Rohr doesn't normally come under your command, but her ship's expertise is considered more useful than the ''Claud'', whose primary function is scanning. At Mission Hour 7:26 the trio are within 5 miles of the ''Nebulous'' and tapering in to intercept. The agreed plan is for the ''Jarif'' and the ''Casket'' to dock together and then dock with the ''Nebulous''. This is achieved and you prepare a team to explore. Yourself and Captain Rohr will leave Lieutenant Kij and Communications Officer Nern in command of your respective ships. You will bring Senior Science Officer Jude. Rohr will bring Senior Medical Officer Tamar along. Should you take anyone else?

No chance of communicating, then. One option would be to fire a very low intensity laser shot and see if the ''Nebulous'' puts up her shields. (The ''Mortis'' has better and longer range weaponry than the ''Jarif'').
