You quietly slip into the barracks early in the morning, heart pounding as it always does when you sneak in before the military drills begin. Your armor rests in its usual place on its hooks and there is no one around. Slipping out of your simple overcoat and cotton dress, you exchange the prison of feminine clothing for the constricting freedom of armor. Wrapping your chest tightly, you wriggle into your long white undershirt and tug on your chain mail. You've long since gotten used to the extra weight and find that it makes you feel powerful to know that you are strong enough to fight despite your metal shell. Today is a full-armor day because Sir Rodney is setting up a dueling tournament for all the knights in training at Castle Argon. You tug on your boots, fasten on your breastplate, and strap on your greaves and shin guards. Though the help of a squire would make dressing much easier, you can't trust anyone with your secret, much less a young boy. Tying up your long brown hair with leather thongs, you pull on your helmet and gauntlets. Although your helmet doesn't hide your face, so far it seems the other knights simply assume you are a rather effeminate man and haven't scrutinized you too closely. It doesn't hurt that your training has allowed you to hold your own against most of the other knights.

Grabbing the sword and shield presented to you by Sir Rodney when you were accepted as a castle knight, you stride out to the practice yard for your customary warm-up. You prefer to be the first one out on the field to avoid any awkward conversations with the other knights and their squires. You head to one of the wooden dummies and begin combination one. High right, mid left, thrust, repeat. You sense Sir Rodney's arrival and know he is watching you from behind. You continue as if he's not even there, switching to combination five as the other knights arrive on the field. Soon they are all practicing their most challenging combination drills alongside you. The practice yard is filled with the thumping of metal against wood until Sir Rodney calls the start of the duels.

Your first partner is a burly knight, half a head taller than you, with a solid broad sword he wields two-handed. His strength could wear you down quickly so you'll need to pick your strategy carefully.
