You kneel down, feeling awfully stupid.
"Thank you," you mumble.
It turns around, its head moving from side to side. It is looking for something. Scurrying across to one corner, where a lot of dust is scattered near a heap of boxes, it gets up on its hind legs again. It is - signaling to you!
Quietly, Charmaine and you follow. The rat stare at you for a moment. Then it reaches out a paw into the dust. It starts to scratch out a shape.
"A message," Charmaine breathes.
"Rats can't write-" you begin.
Then you look down.
It is there, in front of your eyes.
A single letter.
K!
The rat stretches our its paw again. A chill goes down your spine.
W!
Charmaine catches her breath. She grabs your elbow and shake it fiercely. You watch the rat write another letter.
