“I’ll take two cards,” you say wondering if you’re tossing a golden opportunity away. Well, three aces is still a great hand, even if your cards don’t help you at all.

“And just one for me,” Lin says.

You get a sinking feeling when you look at your two new cards, seeing that they don’t help you at all. “I’ve got three aces,” you tell the girls. Lin looks at her card, and then triumphantly puts her hand down. “A straight!”

At about the same time, Claire throws her hand down, “I got my flush!” She gives Lin a big high-five. “See, nobody’s luck can hold out all night.”

Bad luck or incredible stupidity, you think. You’re wondering what possessed you to throw away the best hand as you pay for the cookies.

You steal your last glance at the girls as they get dressed in their uniforms again. “Thanks for the game, and for buying all of those cookies from us,” Claire says as they leave. “I’m sure you’ll be thinking of us every time you eat one.”
