The Generation 1 West Coast super mutants are the most intelligent of the supermutants, and normally form the leadership of most supermutant groups. While there are super mutant communities, normally mostly generation 1 super mutants, many of the super mutants in the wasteland will be tribal. These normally act as the tribal leaders.

Generation 1 Night-Kin West Coast Super Mutants, while intelligent, have suffered mental damages from constant use of Stealth Boys. All have varying degrees of schizophrenia and are hostile to all non-super mutant creatures. They are often found either living alone, or in small groups, either with other Night-Kins, or with feral ghouls. Some can be found in super mutant communities, but are rarely found in super mutant tribes.

Generation 2 West Coast Super Mutants are super mutants converted from wastelanders, rather than those converted from the vault dwellers. The radiation impacts resulted in more brutish, less intelligent super mutants. These super mutants act as the common tribal members, under the leadership of the generation 1 super mutants, or act as the common laborers in non-slave controlling super mutant communities.

Generation 3 Vault 87 East Coast Super Mutants so not have any real society. They live similar to feral animals, killing and eating anything that is not them. While they do travel in groups, the groups could be more accurately described as packs. No real society has ever been observed among these super mutants.

Super Mutant society varies depending on location.

Super mutants can be divided into three generations:

Generation 1 - Generation 1 super mutants have two sub groups: West Coast Super Mutants and Night-Kin West Coast Super Mutants
