You need weapons first for protection.

"Weapons," you say. "We need to arm ourselves."
Marla nods. "I agree. I've got a few bottles of water and some canned goods lying around, so we'll be alright on food for a couple of weeks at least. Once we're armed we can resupply everything else." She finishes up her cigarette, then leans down to tighten the laces on her boots. "So where do we go?"
"Well," you say, thinking. "There's that army surplus store with guns and ammo about a block from here. And there's a pawn shop around the corner, not even half a block."
"Surplus store will have more weapons and ammo. I'm sure the pawn shop has weapons, but it might not have ammo at all."
"Pawn shop is closer, though. We have no idea how many crazies are out there."
"Up to you," she says.
