"Those ripples are fucking huge" You think, "It's got to be a Leviathan of sorts". Whatever it is, you've got enough on your person where you feel comfortable slipping into the water and abandoning your boat and supplies. You aim towards the beach and begin a underwater crawl. You'll let it poke around your ship, figure out that it can't eat it, then it'll leave. You'll swim back and have a funny story to tell next campfire. These thoughts are almost yanked out of your swimming form as a tentacle violently wraps around your leg.
