Someone's tried to frame you. They did a pretty poor job of it, but they must have been in a hurry. If you heard the gunshot from across the street that means someone else could have as well. You keep holding on to the gun and move to the body. Your own Luger is nowhere to be seen.
Arthur Riordan is lying on his face. The carpet under him is stained red. He's definitely gone. So much for your case. There is a coffee table close to where he's fallen. The wineglass sitting on this table catches your attention. You reach out a hand for it.
'Drop it,' a voice says from the doorway behind you. It's light and feminine but there is a hard edge to it. 'I said drop it,' the voice says. It quavers slightly. You hear the click of a safety catch. You don't drop the gun but you bend down and place it on the carpet.
'Now put your hands up and turn around.' You do as the voice orders and turn to see a girl holding a small six shot Colt automatic. She's small and pretty. So is her gun. Neither looks terribly happy with you.
'I don't suppose there's any point in saying I didn't do it.' You eye the gun carefully. Her hand is shaking and the gun is shaking with it. You doubt she could hit you even if she did take a shot. But are you willing to take the risk?
