As you approach the door, you vaguely remember being angry last night at the pub, angry about something that seemed important. You'd been telling people about it, telling people about it at great length, you rather suspect: your clearest visual recollection is of glazed looks on other people's faces. Something about a new bypass you'd just found out about. It had been in the pipeline for months only no one seemed to have known about it.

That would explain a)your hangover, and b)the bulldozers idling just outside your house. It explains several other things, but we won't get into any of them because they're just not all that relevant to current events.
