Melanie and Michael

Melanie and Michael are two old friends who went to high school together. It has been five years since graduation, and five years since they've seen each other. They meet again at the local Safeway when they both come home for the holiday season -- a happenstance that has not yet occurred in previous years, with Melanie having a family reunion in another city one year when Michael comes home, or Michael staying at school because his school's town gets a horrid snowstorm when Melanie comes home. Things like that.
Thrilled to see one another after so long, Melanie and Michael find themselves attracted to one another, even this soon right here in the Safeway pasta/rice/soup aisle. Since their families both celebrate Christmas and it's only the twenty-second, Michael asks Melanie if she wants to meet him for a drink later this evening. Melanie has nothing going on since her folks tend to hit the sack early, and accepts the invitation.
However, things are more complicated than they appear on the surface. Michael has long been attracted to Melanie, who was one of the hottest and most popular girls at their school. It just so happens, though, that Michael recently proposed to his college girlfriend of 3 years. Melanie, on the other hand, never really looked at Michael in a sexual way back then. That's certainly changed now -- Michael has really matured over the past 5 years. His devotion to the gym has paid off -- Melanie can't believe how amazing his athletic body looks. But Melanie just broke up with her long-term boyfriend, Dane, about two months ago. To say she's hesitant about dating is an understatement.
The two meet at a small trendy place, have a couple drinks -- enough to maintain a reasonable amount of sobriety -- and they finish up the evening out with a bundled-up walk around the park. Michael then extends a further invitation to come back to his folks' place for a cup of hot cocoa. He assures her that his parents are fast asleep by now, and their house is big enough to where they won't wake them if they hang out. Melanie, amused by this, accepts, takes her own car, and follows Michael out to his parents' house.
