A loud BANG wakes you up, and you quickly get on your feet. You don't know what it is, but it seems to be coming from outside the door. ''It might be the person who kidnapped me,'' you think, listing everything it might be in your mind. ''Or maybe someone to get me out of this weird place.''

You get up, making sure to grab the empty water bottle. You never know when it might come in handy! You walk over to the tall wooden door and twist the knob, suprised when the door opens without springing any deadly traps.

You're about to step through the doorway when you look down and notice that the door leads to an ocean! It looks vast and deep; you'd have to be strong and a good swimmer to survive it. Plus, the water is probably ice cold, just like the air outside. You're shivering.

So, what will you do?

You wake up in a strange place that you've never seen before, but looks weirdly familiar. It reminds you of a steel bunker, and it has no exits except for a large wooden door that doesn't fit in at all. There are no windows, and the only light sources are a few candles scattered around the room. They smell exactly like the candles in your house, and it makes you want to go home a lot, even though you just woke up here a minute ago.

All you have is an empty water bottle and the clothes on your back, so your only option of escape is through the door. That is, if it's not locked, or worse, filled with deadly traps. Will you take the chance?

It reminds you of a steel bunker, and it has no exits except for a large wooden door that doesn't fit in at all. You sneak behind him, watching him from the shadows... then, BAM! His cannon goes off as you stab him in the chest with your dagger. You feel a pang of regret, and you try to shrug it off, but... you couldn't.

During the ten minutes since the Games began, ten tributes had died already. The boy you killed, the boy Sadie killed, and then eight other tributes who died bloody deaths. You feel sorry for them, but... you're still alive. Was that all that mattered?

The bloodbath seems to be over, and you're still curious about where we'll set up shelter.

As soon as the starting gong is rung, you make a wild dash for the Cornicopia, like Devin had told you to. You grab a silvery dagger and a neon yellow backpack full of supplies for yourself, then work on getting rid of the other tributes. You chase off a girl from one of the outer districts, before looking over at Sadie, the girl from District 2. A cannon blasted as soon as she stabbed a boy in the chest with her machete, but that was the only death so far. All of the Careers, including yourself, were busy chasing off the other tributes. A few of them grabbed some stuff, but now much.

That's when you see the District 7 boy. He's running off with a bow and a quiver of arrows, and you know it's your job to kill him. But are you brave enough?

You decide to sit with the Careers, because you might be able to get in their pack! That would be awesome, and you might survive the Games if you do. Of course, it's rare when a Career invites someone who isn't in a Career district to join the pack, so it wasn't very likely.

As much as you wated to cry, you don't. It would make you look weak, and who would want to sponsor or be allies with the "sobbing weakling" from District 5? Nobody, that's for sure. As you walk up there, you're glad you don't show your fear or your sadness at having your name chosen.

Kitty gives you a nod, before gesturing for the crowd to applaud. Barely anyone claps, which is really weird, so some of the Peacekeepers do it. She frowns, obviously upset about it, and you enjoy it. It's really funny, seeing Kitty like this. But still, the show must go on. '''"Now for the boys..."''' she says, with only a little pause instead of a big, dramatic one. '''"Mickey..."'''

You weren't listening to his last name, but his first one was Mickey. You have never met him before, but he came up onto the stage from the 17 year olds' section. He was really tall, with tanned skin and messy black hair. You can see the sparkle of laughter in his brown eyes, so he must've thought Kitty was hillarious too.

You feel tears run down your cheeks as you walk up there. You're not helping anything by crying, and the Careers (a pack of deadly tributes from Districts 1, 2, and 4) might target you because of it. But still, it helped you feel better in a way, letting it out.

Kitty gives you a nod, before gesturing for the crowd to applaud. A few of them clapped slowly and kind of softly, but that was it. Maybe they recognized you from around the district, or maybe they felt bad to see you in tears. Then, she gestures for the few that were clapping to stop. It's almost time for the Reaping, the mandatory, district-wide gathering where the two Hunger Games tributes from each district are chosen. You're walking in this huge crowd of kids, until you reach the section where the 15 year olds were supposed to be.

A few minutes later, the District 5 escort, a small, cheerful woman named Kitty enters the stage, and a few people in the crowd clap. Most of the kids were paralyzed with fear, though, including yourself. This might be your death sentance. She gives the audience a big grin that was obviously fake, and giggles, '''"Hello District 5! Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor!"''' Her hand gestures towards the big screen above her as she says, '''"We've brought you a special movie to watch, all the way from our amazing Capitol!"'''

The "special movie" was the same one they made everyone watch every year. It explained how Panem was created, the Dark Days, the wars, the rebellions, and how the Hunger Games began. '''"So, from that day forwards,"''' the video ended. '''"We called the compition the Hunger Games, and it brought honor and glory to all of us here in Panem."'''

In the split second the video ended, Kitty began to talk again, '''"Now, what you've all been waiting for, our tributes! The ladies will go first, like usual."''' When she said that, your heart seemed to stop from both fear and dread.
