Fred followed the lava into the most incredible chamber he had ever seen. It appeared the lava had been coming year for many years, as it had harded into wonderous rock formations.

"Why, hello there!" said a voice from behind him. Startled, Fred whipped around, finding himself face-to-face with a strange creature...one that appeared to be made entirely of Lava! It smiled at Fred. "Welcome to my home!"

As Lord Fred reaches the source of the lava, he is surprised to find an underground volcano residing deep in the caves. It is spewing a molten river of lava which flows in three different direction including the direction that he came from.

As Fred looks around the cavern, he noticed a door attached to the vertical slope at the base of the volcano. "How odd!" mutters Fred.

Far below him Fred sees a fast flowing river. Fred sees a ledge coming up that he might be able to grab onto.

Fred coninues on down the passegeway and discovers a pool of lava.

Fred wondered what could be causing this. Some serious magic must be at work here.

While Fred couldn't get close to the lava, he could clearly see that he could safely follow it. There was a nice wide passage that led from where the lava came from. There was also a passage that led to where the lava was going.

"Perhaps I should follow the lava to where it came from," said Fred out loud. "Surely I'll find whoever is responsible. Or... perhaps I should see where its going. Perhaps someone is trying to bring the lava to them?"

Fred decided that if he had to face this dragon he had better get it over with, and allowed Velus to lead him through the maze of tunnels that led towards the dragon's lair. Eventually:

That damned dog was at it again.

"Yip! Yip! Grrr... Yip! Yap! Grr..." barked the dog.

Fred got ready to kick the dog again, but then he noticed something... The dog wasn't actually attacking him like he thought. It would run away a few feet, then run back to Fred and bark some more. It paused to stare at Fred and wag it's tail.

"What do you want little doggy?" asked Fred. The dog was excited now that it had Fred's attention. It ran back and forth even faster. Fred decided that the dog must be trying to tell him something. Maybe it wanted him to follow it?

Fred followed the dog. It kept on running ahead, and then pausing to let Fred catch up. He followed through damp, dark corridors. They seemed to be going deeper and deeper into the earth.

After going through a maze of tunnels for what seemed like an hour or more, the dog finally came to a big metal door. To the right of the door was a red button labeled "Don't Touch". Overhead was a metal ring attatched to a chain. Fred couldn't see where the chain went. The dog seemed to indicate this is where they should be, but it didn't indicate whether Fred pulls the ring, or presses the button.

Fred doesn't want any part of the machinery going on in there. He is an adventurer, not an inventor, after all. He turned around, took one step, and nearly stepped into a pile of something particularly nasty...

"Hmm... a Dragon must be close by," Fred said to himself. He determined that he had nearly stepped into a pile of dragon droppins. Instictively, he looked around to make sure the dragon was not nearby.

Fred knew that the dragon had something to do with the machinery. Perhaps he should stick around and see if the dragon shows up again. He certainly could surprise him. Or perhaps it was wise. Fred tried to pick up the trail of the dragon and catch him in his lair, possibly asleep.

Just as soon as Fred drops below the water level, he's sucked into an underground current. Fred has no control as he's pulled with the flow of the water. Precious time ticks away, as our hero can't breathe under water.

Just as all hope seems lost... That point beyond which no one could have survived, Fred is thrown from the water and lands on a sandy beach. Fred passes out.

"Yes, I do. For a reasonable fee, I can do any magic that I know. Other magic will have to wait until I can finish studying this tome."

"Cool!" says Fred. "How reasonable?"

"Depends on how much effort it takes me to cast a spell." comes Belboz's reply.

Fred thinks for a minute and asks the necromancer...

Lord Frederigo had heard of such things before, this floating of chests upon underground rivers. His clan, the D'Honaires had fought the dragon for the past seven generations. His father was hero of the last skirmish with the beast. As a child, he had been regaled with tales of his fathers journey, and the many strange sights he had seen.

Once, in caverns ruled by the dragon's minions, his father had encountered a curious situation. A group of mercenaries, evading the patrols of those who served the dragon, had been smuggling items through the caverns, right underneath the dragon's nose!

Evidently, none had caught them, even to this very day. Frederigo glanced about, trying to find one of the smugglers. Though they were well hidden, they were rarely far from their goods.

Fortunately the dog is too small to do any damage. Fred gives it a kick on the bum and it runs out of the cave, whimpering a little.

Fred feels kind of bad about it, but the dog did attack him. And he didn't hurt it.
Fred went deeper into the cave. Suddenly it opened up into a large area with many steaming, clanking machines. Fred could see just enough to make his way through the rows. Occasinally he spotted vague dark shapes doing things. He wasn't sure he wanted to know what was going on.

The dog is friendly. In fact, the dog is sentient! Through a system of 'Yes and no' barks Fred quickly sets up, he learns that this dog is actually a kidnapped teenager who lived on a farm nearby. Seems the dragon didn't eat the people it kidnapped, it changed them into animals! Animals didn't chop down trees to make homes, they didn't turn cool lush fields into cornfields, they didn't make ugly villages in lovely valleys.

The teenager, whose name is Velus, insists on showing Fred where the dragon sleeps so Fred can chop it's head off.

The light is certainly an attractive option. Strange creatures generally tend to hang out around water anyways. Best to save the fighting for the important stuff.

Fred follows the light. He soon turns past a corner and finds the source of the light. He sees an old man chanting, reading something out of a book. Floating just in front of the man is the source of light, too brilliant to look at.

Fred has not been noticed yet. Perhaps he could safely sneak past, and avoid any potential conflict. On the other hand, this man might be able to assist him in some fashion.

Strange lights bother Fred. He wants nothing at all to do with them. Where the water is, is where Fred wants to go.

Fred follows the water through a very curvey passageway. As he gets farther from the source of light, he is forced to light a torch to see.

In the distance he sees a pool where the water appears to be heading. In the middle of the pool is a treasure chest, floating just above the water.

A warm breeze blew from the cave. Fred continued on inside. Strangely, it did not get darker as Fred continued on inside the cave.

A ways into the cave, Fred came to a fork. Down one direction went a trail of water, but it got darker down that end. Down the other end it seemed to be getting even brighter still.

"Left has always been my lucky direction", thought Fred. With firm resolve, Fred headed towards the cave on his left.

A cold breeze blew from the cave. Fred continued on inside. As Fred walked farther down the entrance, the cave got darker and darker.

Fred heard the faint sound of rustling. It was so dark that he couldn't see what it was. Quickly, he lit one of the torches he brought along with him.

"Lord Fred, take this map. Use it to locate the entrance to the dragon's lair at the Southern Caves. May God be with you on your quest."

Fred looked at the map again. "This is where it should be", he muttered to himself...

Fred looked up from the map viewing the two entrances again. The map didn't say anything about two entrances.

"I can't just sit here forever... I suppose I'll have to choose one... Which will it be?"
