"What difference does it make?" Cole said. "You have a potential problem here. If the Rivellias find out that you took him--whoever he is--you will be dead. I suggest we slit his throat and dump him over the side, but I'll support whatever you decide to do, Daelin."

You run your fingers back through your hair and pace from one side of the aft deck to the other. You could kill him and be done with it, but you like to hold murder as a last resort only. You could circle around and wait for the tide to change, and return him to shore, hopefully before anyone notices that he's missing. Or you could continue on to Korum. After all, what are the odds that anyone noticed the kidnapping, and was sober enough to remember what you look like, ''and'' managed to get word back to the Rivellias? You stand beside the table and watch Takita move surely around the compact room, stirring the pot with a long-handled spoon, chopping up several peeled potatoes and adding them to the steaming liquid, checking several loaves of dark, hearty break baking in the oven attached to the side of the stove. "What are you cooking?" you ask, and he glances at you, but only for a second. "It smells good."

"Fish soup, Captain," he says and you frown.

"I don't remember buying any fish before we set sail," you say. You have barrels of salt pork, mutton, and beef, but no fish.

"I don't believe you did, Captain," he says. "Was that what you wanted to talk to me about?" He seems eager to get rid of you. Curious.

"No, that wasn't it," you say. "I was wondering what sort of faerie you were. I've never heard of anything quite like you before."

"I'm a braeddis fey," Takita says. "We're a small tribe. We keep to ourselves, mostly. Few have ever heard of us."

"Well, then it sounds like I'm lucky to have met you," you say. "You strike me as a very interesting individual, one that I would like to get to know better."

"Thank you, Captain," he says, his eyes on the floor as he bows his head. "Perhaps it could wait until later, though. I have to get the fish for the soup."

"Of course," you say, frowning slightly as he slips past you, pressing himself back against the wall to keep from brushing against you in the tight space. He can't possibly know what you are, could he?

You follow Takita out onto the narrow corridor and grab him by the arm. He makes a surprised sound as you shove him back against the wall and step in front of him, leaning down into his face.

"Have I done something to make you uncomfortable around me?" you ask. "You seem very nervous."

"N- no, Captain," he says, his voice trembling. He keeps his eyes averted, almost like he's afraid to look at you. Mesmerizing with a look or a voice is a trick some vampires pick up, but you've never heard of it being attributed to incubi. What does he think you are?

"Who has been talking about me?" you ask. Onboard, only Cole knows about you, but over the years you've known many people who either figured it out for themselves, or you trusted them with the truth. Clearly, your trust was misplaced somewhere. "What did they tell you?"

"Nothing, Captain," Takita says, a hint of desperation in his voice. "I- I just don't like to be touched." You glance over at your hand grasping his arm and you slowly relax your grip, letting you hand slide down his bare arm, over his silky blue-green fur with the delicate black spots edged in silver frost. He shudders, but it's not loathing you feel from him, but pleasure. His energy is rich and sweet, like rum cake and strawberries. You shift you hand from his elbow to his hip, and he cries out as you shove your hand up under his faded denim vest.

"You're a liar," you tell him, drinking in his pleasure as your hand caresses his warm, silky fur, sliding up his back. Your fingertips brush the hairless, riffled edge of one of his wing ridges and he falls forward against you, his blunt claws digging into your shirt as he clutches at you, trembling.

"Captain, please--" he gasps, and you realize that molesting your new crewman in the middle of the corridor probably isn't a real good idea, but the pleasure rolling off of him is so rich and thick, it's not going to take much more to finish sating your hunger.

You cross the deck, intercepting Takita as he reaches the main hatch. He looks up at you with his strange, slitted eyes, and then quickly lowers his gaze, looking down at the deck instead.

"Is there something I can do for you, Captain?" he asks, his voice surprisingly rough and rattling, almost like a growl. Considering his other animalistic qualities--you glance down at his tail, slung between his legs--he very well could be growling at you.

"I would just like to speak with your for a few moments," you say. He nods, still not looking at you.

"Aye, Captain," he says. "Will it take long? I have supper on the stove."

"It might," you say, glancing around. Everyone looks busy, so you aren't likely to be interrupted. "Let's speak in the galley, then. The crew would not be pleased if supper burned on the first day our of harbor." You chuckle and smile, but he just steps back from the hatch and waits for you to go first. You sigh and descend the steps, into the cramped, dimly-lit interior of the ship. Toward the bow was storage, to the stern was the crew quarters, and amidships was the galley on the port side and the head and the brig to starboard. The lower deck held the majority of the supplies--fresh water, powder and shot for the guns, potatoes, flour, and rum--with room for plunder or slaves or whatever.

You step into the galley to find a large pot simmering on the stove. After several long, miserable years of eating mealy biscuits and salted meat every day, you invested in a modern magical stove. The dull black iron beast is ugly, and hideously expensive, but the fire burns cleanly on nothing but kelp, of which there is an abundance floating all around you.

"I said I was a reasonable man, not an idiot," you say. "Ten coins for each subsequent encounter, and you can top starting with the second time." He draws a slow breath, running his tongue across the fronts of his teeth as he stares up toward the ceiling, considering.

"Fine," he says at last, "but should you decide to call the arrangement off, I shall still be paid in full, a minimum of the first ilae."

"Agreed," you say, offering him your hand to seal the deal. You see him hesitate, but then he shakes your hand, and you understand why. He's clearly more nervous than he let on--his hand is cold. "Relax," you tell him. "I'm not interested in company just now. I'll let you know tomorrow when your services will be required."

"Very well, Captain Vrellis," he says with a slight bow of his head, withdrawing his hand from yours. You let him leave, closing the door behind him and leaning against it with a sigh. He makes you nervous and you can't understand why. Something about him just strikes you as slightly...peculiar.

After a moment, you venture back out on deck. Cole is still standing at the wheel, observing the crew from the raised stern deck. He's scowling about something, which is never a good sign. With eyes like a hawk--literally--little escapes him. You see your cook, Takita, standing at the starboard rail, his tail waving in the wind as he plays a set of reed pipes. That's probably what Cole was scowling about. It's not encouraging to see someone slacking off on the first day, and you should probably make an example of him to prevent it from spreading. Laziness is a virulent disease, but luckily you have an infallible cure--the cat o'nine tails. You hate using it, though. Perhaps speaking with him will be enough.

"You're half athaenian, aren't you?" you ask. He sobs and nods his head. Athaenians are generally small and tough, with silver hair and violet eyes. They also age half as slow as humans, so although Kaerillian has been alive for eighteen years, physically he's a boy of maybe fifteen. You've fed on boys before, but not since you were one yourself.

"Just relax," you whisper, your lips brushing the shell of his pointed ear. "I'm going to release one of your arms now, and I want you to touch yourself." He stiffens against you, drawing a sharp breath as you let go of his arm. As soon as you do, he takes a swing at you, trying to get away again. Incubus: Pick the androgynous faerie

Casually, you slip out of the alley and cross the street, making for the front door of the inn. You glance at the faerie as you approach--you still can't tell what gender, if any, it is--and then pretend to do a double-take. You smile at the beautiful creature and stop.

"Are you waiting for someone?" you ask. The faerie looks you over, eyes like rubies moving down your body.

"Maybe," the faerie replies, its voice soft and throaty, neither feminine nor masculine, "but not you." It turns its face away and you draw closer, catching the faint scent of hyacinths and oranges.

"Why not?" you ask, making a show of looking down at yourself. "What's wrong with me?"

"Do you want a list?" the faerie asks, but you know better than to be insulted. Being rude and sarcastic is part of their culture. They're naturally confrontational. The faerie struts a circle around you, making disparaging sounds. "Well, you're clearly human," it says at last. "Your clothes are too nice to belong to a rough, tough farmer or fisherman, and not nice enough to belong to a sadistic, eccentric lord. You hands look strong and you might have a decent length of wood in those trousers, but I don't see any scars on you, so I doubt you'd be interested in the games I want to play."

The faerie turns away, presenting you with a view of its back, and you stiffen at the assortment of scars and bruises spread across its shoulders, visible through the lacing up the back of the corset, even over the faerie's fluted wing ridges. That surprises you. The ridges are highly sensitive erogenous organs, enabling a faerie to use their glamour and project wings made out of light into the air behind them. The wings and the glamour are a measure of a faerie's status. Briefly, you wonder if this creature was a harlot before it got the scars, or if the injury forced it into the streets.

"Scars like this, you mean?" you ask, unbuttoning your left cuff and pushing the sleeve back to reveal a wide, pale band of scar tissue encircling your wrist. The faerie glances at you and its ruby eyes light up, a hungry, envious look replacing the previous scorn.

"Actually," you say, stepping closer to the masochistic faerie, "I was hoping to be on the giving end this time.
