'Fine,' you say. 'But for that kind of job it'll cost you twenty per day plus expenses and a hundred dollar retainer with the promise of a further two-fifty if I complete the job. If I'm going up against tough guys I'm not going to sell myself cheap.'

'But what about our earlier agreement?'

'That was before I knew Marty Riordan was involved,' you say. 'Of course,' you grin, 'I'm always open to negotiations...'

The blonde smiles. 'You know, you might just do. Obviously I need you to do it without Marty getting to suspicious, and I need it done quickly. The rest is up to you. As for negotiations, let's discuss them when you make your report.'

You shake her hand over the deal as she hands you the money. 'Good luck Mr. Horne,' she says. 'I have a feeling you'll need it.'
