You wait for a few seconds. You could've sworn that John was right behind you. You start to become suspicious.

At about this moment, you are shot to death. John was so close to you that he heard you talking to yourself. He saw you brandishing a metal pipe, and decided to shoot you to death from between the planks of the wooden hatch.
