"Billy--" you start, but he quickly covers your mouth with his warm hand. He smells like hay. Your eyes beg a question-- what's going on?
Fortunately, he understands. "Pirates," he whispers. "I need you to be quiet so we can get away. Okay?"
You nod, slightly, your skin prickling with cold sweat. Pirates! What will happen to the two of you? Fear shakes you, but you hang on to your faith in Billy. Even now, his blue eyes flash with determination and courage. He's going to get you out of here, safely.
He takes his hand off your mouth and leads you away. You pad after him through the city streets. People flee all around you, and with the more cracks of gunfire and cannon you hear, the bigger the crowds grow. Some leave with nothing but the clothes on their backs, others try to carry as much of their belongings as they can. As you look around wildly for signs of the criminals, someone grabs you from behind, and you lose your grip on Billy's hand. Immediately he whirls around, looking for you, but you're being dragged roughly through the crowd.
