You shrug on your backpack and head out the door. Your mother is already in the car, which is idling in the driveway. You open the door and get inside. After you fasten your seat belt you open up your backpack and examine the contents.
It contains some basic gear for a new Pokemon trainer, including 5x Potions, an antidote, a paralyze heal, a special pouch for holding Berries in and a can of dry Pokemon food. It also contains your smartphone and your wallet, which has five 20-dollar bills and a credit card which links to your bank account, which contains $800 from your part-time summer job.
You drive for some time through your home town. It is a somewhat small town, but it is big enough to have its own Pokemon Gym. That's where you and your mother are headed for New Trainer Orientation. It is an all-day event that almost all young adults go to once they reach the 12th grade. The legal age for owning your own Pokemon in the USA is 17. New Trainer Orientation only happens twice a year, typically corresponding with the beginnings of the semesters in public high schools.
Your cell phone begins to vibrate. It is a text message from your best friend, Mara. "Hey, are you here yet? I'm waiting outside for you"
