You shake your head, then ask: "What happened here?"
She glances nerviously around the room, shifting her weight from her left foot to her right.
"He... He... My mum's husband... It was awful... " she pauses, taking a deep breath to try calming herself so she can explain, "He just took out a gun... I didn't even know he had one... He started shooting. At everyone... My mum... he hit her first. Oh god... It was horrible... "
You can see tears welling up in her eyes, and from the looks of her face she was probably crying before you'd arrived too.
"Is... is he gone? Am I safe?" she asks, sounding hopeful.
