Little happens over the next couple of days. The two other males in your trench never offer their names to you, so you know them simply as Shorty and Mole. There was a third boy, but he left the trench.
Shells zip over your head at all hours of day or night. Between the sleep deprived haze and hunger, you're almost tempted to jump out there.
The body of the girl begins to decompose. The stench is horrible, beyond anything you've experienced It bloats and the flesh has darkened. A gruesome reminder of your bad judgement.
Every once in a while, you peek over your trench and fire at the machine guns, hoping to disable one. Unlike the real things, these turrets never seem to run out of ammo. Nor do they ever jam. But sooner or later, you'll need food and water.
Shorty, the weird boy who was lucky enough to be carrying binoculars, was scouting ahead. Mole, sporting a goofy grin, waves you over toward them.
"We found an opening!"
An opening on the surface, meaning the possibility of food or water. Maybe taking or destroying a machine gun.
