War. War never changes.

In the year 1945, my great-great grandfather, serving in the army, wondered when he'd get to go home to his wife and the son he'd never seen. He got his wish when the US ended World War II by dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The World awaited Armageddon. Instead, something miraculous happened. We began to use atomic energy not as a weapon, but as a nearly limitless source of power.

People enjoyed luxuries once thought only existed in the realm of science fiction. Domestic robots, fusion-powered cars, portable computers. But then, in the 21st century, people awoke from the American dream.

Years of consumption lead to shortages of every major resource. The entire world unravelled. Peace became a distant memory. It is now the year 2077. We stand on the brink of total war, and I am afraid. For myself, for my wife, for my infant son - because if my time in the army taught me one thing: it's that war, war never changes. - Fallout 4 opening

Welcome to post-apocalyptia!

In the year 2077, the world was consumed with atomic fire, devastating everything that even resembled civilization in the process. Few survived the war of 2077, with even fewer living through the radiation that proceeded to engulf Earth, and yet some were ready; some were "prepared for the future!". Great underground vaults spread across the United States of America saved the majority of the survivors, while terrible radiation ravaged the minds and bodies of the less fortunate: turning them into ghouls, eternally tortured as their sanity leaves them and they become feral...

The setting persists across many areas of the USA, which prior to the war had been divided into commonwealths, such as the Boston Commonwealth on the east coast. In the current wasteland, many factions have rose up in the place of the long deceased government, some trying to create some form of order; the New California Republic and Brotherhood of Steel being some of the closest to this ideology. Others however, are little more than glorified raiders and bandits, yet these groups are in the substantial majority, making the world a very dangerous place.
