You wish whoever that was luck. If you were better armed, or better prepared, or Melanie didn't need these drugs, maybe you could help. Maybe that's just an excuse. Either way, better safe than sorry. You're not losing your life over someone who's probably done for anyway.

You race back to the station, pull in and park. Rushing out of the car, you start pounding on the door. Finally, you see the light in the backroom as Cassandra, the woman who's saved Melanie's life, comes to let you in.

Shutting the door and locking it, you head back to check on Melanie while the other woman goes through the bag you hand her.

"This is a great haul," she says. "Seriously. I didn't think you'd find half of this."

You silently congratulate yourself. "How is she?"

"Stable," Cassandra says. "Blood pressure is good, despite how much she's bled. I've got her patched up, and we'll start giving her antibiotics in the morning, when she's a bit stronger."

"I don't know how to thank you," you say.

"No thanks necessary," she says. "You saved my life. It's the least I could do." She motions to the pool of water on the floor around your feet. "You should get out of those wet clothes. There are a few old blankets on a shelf over there. Wrap up and let your clothes dry."
