Apple DOS was announced when Apple president [[Mike Markkula]] became dissatisfied with the [[Cassette|audio cassette interface]] on the Apple II. At the executive board meeting in December [[1977]], he made a list of company goals. On the top of that list was "floppy disk". [[Steve Wozniak]] was to be the one to build a floppy disk drive and write a [[disk operating system]]. Wozniak did not know much about how floppy disk drives worked, but he once read a [[Shugart]] manual about how the drives worked. He then looked at an [[IBM]] drive to see how they correctly timed the read and write functions. They did it with complex circuitry. It was then when Wozniak realized that if he constructed the disk drives another way ("soft-sectored", the drive would self-synchronize), no circuitry was needed. They also did away with a little timing hole needed for IBM drives ("hard-sectored", this used the hole to tell what part of the disk was under the heads at any time).

Wozniak tabbed [[Randy Wigginton]] to write the disk operating system. They worked hard, trying to get everything completed by the Consumer Electronics Show 1978. They did, and by the first week of 1978 (the week the show was held), they had a completed drive, operating system, and demo disk. The information on the disk was accidentally lost when Wigginton suggested making a backup of it, but it was successfully recovered and everything went as planned.

During that time, the PowerBook line went under several revisions, including going through the [[68k]] to [[PowerPC]] [[Microprocessor|processor]] transition. The line was replaced by the [[MacBook series]] in 2006.

== Early days ==

The PowerBook was first released in October 1991 in three different models: the [[PowerBook 100]], the [[PowerBook 140]], and the [[PowerBook 170]]. These machines were vastly different from other, similar portable machines at that time. They included a [[trackball]], gray, smaller cases, and position of the keyboard, which allowed room for palmrests. Typical portable computers at that time (including Apple's own [[Macintosh Portable]]) tended to have the keyboard positioned toward the user and were generally large, so the PowerBook was a surprise to the portable computer industry.

The PowerBook line was supplemented in [[1992]] by the [[PowerBook Duo]] line. This line was a line of [[subnotebook]]s what were thin and light. These models had [[DuoDock|their own docking station]] which looked like a desktop computer itself. These models did not sell well as expected.

The first line of PowerBooks were very successful at first, capturing 40% of portable computer sales. However, the original design team left Apple to work at [[Compaq]], meaning updated models were held back. Also, when the time came to update the PowerBooks to the [[Motorola 68040]] [[microprocessor|processor]], there were major setbacks. The 68040, when placed in a PowerBook, overheated, meaning the line was stuck with the aging [[Motorola 68030]] processor. This also meant that the PowerBook line could not compete with newer [[Intel 80486]]-based portables that had copied the PowerBook's design and features, and Apple would not regain their lead.

In 1992, the PowerBook line received its first major update. The 100 was replaced by the [[PowerBook 145]], the 140 with the [[PowerBook 160]], and the 170 with the [[PowerBook 180]]. This revised line was a state-of-the-art line, as the 180 and 160 were the first PowerBooks to include a grayscale [[Liquid crystal display|LCD]] and were well-received by consumers. [[1993|A year later]], the first color PowerBooks were released, the [[PowerBook 165c]] was released first and the [[PowerBook 180c]] came later. The last true member of the PowerBook 100 series was the [[PowerBook 150]], released in [[1994]]. The [[PowerBook 190]], released in [[1995]], was only a [[Motorola 68LC040]] version of the [[PowerBook 5300]]. It was also the last 68k PowerBook produced. The original PowerBook line spanned almost every 68k processor in a Macintosh; from the 100's [[Motorola 68000|68000]] to the 190's 68LC040. (The only 68k processor not to be included in a PowerBook was the [[Motorola 68020|68020]]).

The '''Apple III''' was one of [[Apple Inc.|Apple]]'s first business computers. It was designed as a heatsink with no cooling vents. It could run the [[Sophisticated Operating System]] (SOS), the precursor to [[ProDOS]]. It had an internal [[5 1/4" floppy disk|floppy drive]], and it could also support Apple's [[Profile (hard drive)|Profile]] hard drive in its 5 [[Megabyte|MB]] configuration and external [[floppy disk]] drives.

== Problems ==
The Apple III had many problems. First, the case design (which had no cooling fan or vents, suggested by [[Steve Jobs]]) caused the chips on some boards to melt off their boards. Apple's recommended solution was to pick the computer up a few inches and drop it. {{also|Some users reported that the disks in its internal disk drive were "melted".}} Another problem was the internal clock (an Apple first at the time) would fail after extended use.

Eventually, most of these problems were remedied by 1981 with a revised Apple III. {{also|Apple had to replace the [[motherboard]]s of the first 14,000 Apple IIIs free of charge.}}

It was also very expensive out of any business computers selling at that time ($4,340 to $7,800 US).

== Apple III Plus ==
The '''Apple III Plus''' was a revised Apple III that was released in 1983. It was sold cheaper than the original Apple III ($2,995 US), doubled the RAM to 256 KB, fixed the internal clock, introduced video interlacing, and had a keyboard and monitor in the style of the [[Apple IIe]] (light gray). However, not even the new "allow me to reintroduce myself" campaign could salvage the III's reputation. The final nail in the Apple III's coffin was the [[IBM PC 5150|IBM PC]], which was released a year after the original Apple III, and soon became available as several [[PC clones|clones]]. It became so successful that the Apple III line was discontinued in September 1985, with about 65,000 systems sold.
