RPG Maker XP gives you a much wider range with its larger faces and many more colors. Instead of using a faceset, like RPG Maker 2000 and 2003, RPG Maker XP uses a single portrait of much larger dimensions. ((Someone verify this information? I haven't yet used the program, but read it somewhere.))

A faceset refers to a set of portraits (usually consisting of 16) used to view a character or item in further detail, such as on menu screens or message segments.

Contents

The File

A faceset file is 192 x 192 pixels and can hold up to 16 different 48 x 48 portraits.

Basic Faceset

A basic faceset has 16 different portraits, each of a different character or NPC. A portrait from the faceset is assigned under the Hero menu within the database, and after one is selected it will display it in the default menu screen. To have a faceset appear in a text box, simply select the appropriate one before the text is entered. This will have RPG Maker recognize it in any text boxes that follow until a new portrait is selected.

Expressive Facesets

Some facesets use a wide variety of their 16 portraits to display the various expressions and such of a single character. The expressions usually accompany their basic, mundane expression with ones of anger, sadness, and happiness. Many editors fill the entire set with different expressions to fit every occasion they may need.

Item Facesets

Sometimes facesets are used when you aquire or inquire about a weapon or item. This method gives the player a more in depth look at the item they have just seen.
