When the great battle for dominance of the Prime Material Plane began between the Incarnations of Good and Evil, Law and Chaos supported both sides while the Non-Aligned Entities stood by to judge the outcome. The Non-Aligned provided as a battlefield a world composed of a core of Chaos surrounded by a shell of Law, with many tendrils of Chaos reaching the surface. Good and Evil were to pass freely between the surface to the core but as the conflict progressed Good has dominated the surface while Evil controls the core. The outer layer resembles Earth, but the core is an enormous chaos beast of shifting passages sprouting arms and legs, claws and tentacles, eyes and fanged mouths that spew forth nightmare creatures spawned of pure Chaos and Evil. The beast is known as Maw, and is greatly feared by humanoid surface dwellers. It is said among men that any cave, any dungeon, any hole in the ground might lead to Maw.
