ADU Fairies

Physiology

Fairies are humanoid beings that range in size from a few inches to half a foot tall. They have very large cat-like eyes and long, delicately pointed ears. They have wings that resemble those of insects, and vary widly in color and form. Their skin color also varies among many different earth tones, while their usually short hair tends to match their wings in color.

Behavior

In all respects Fairies seem to enjoy being around other, larger beings, and in using their varied abilities to aid in the growth and maintenance of civilization, while ensuring that the natural world is respected during the process. Fairies are widespread across the Dracounus, with every civilized planet and then some boasting a robust Fairy population.

While Fairies do not have homes per say, they do require a certain amount of plant life in which they can roost while they sleep. They have also been known to settle near sleeping animals, and some actually prefer to roost in barns or other animal shelters. No one has ever seen a Fairy eat, and many suspect that they may actually absorb a certain amount of energy from the organisms they rest on as they sleep. On planets with harsh winters, they will flock to indoor greenhouses, hydroponic plants, and smaller ones may even settle inside the potted plants of a suburban home - and they are welcomed, as their presence aids in the growth and health of the plants they roost in. Fairies are also notorious for finding their way onto the hydroponic gardens of space going ships (where they are again welcomed), which is the primary way they have spread themselves across the Dracounus.

For clothing they weave together fresh leaves and flowers, each garment a tiny piece of artistry that is discarded after the materials wilt. However, this can take as long as a week, as the Fairy's magical influence will preserve the leaves and flowers for an unnaturally long time. They use as little as possible material, and often multiple faires will carefully divide up a large leaf or distribute every petal of a large flower. This also of course means that whatever they wear matches the flora of the seasons.

Though known to be sentient, Fairies are usually very difficult to understand. They often act very nonsensical, and they either can not or will not learn New Drahek. They communicate with each other using a variety of squeaks and chirps, many of which are outside of the sound range that is audible to most races. Very few have ever understood this language, and then only at a very basic level.

It is not yet known how Fairies reproduce. When one Fairy enters a plant at night to roost, two may very well emerge the next morning. They also do not appear to change much in size over their lifetimes.

Magical/Telepathical Ability

Fairies are not very magically/telepathically powerful; most of their abilities are classified as auric influence (a constantly emanated influence that effects everything with range of a Fairiy's mental aura), and center around growth and purification. As mentioned above, their very presence can make a plant or animal grow stronger and healthier than ever before. However, they do have several abilities that they can use at will, and when doing so their whole bodies glow, often making them appears as motes of light when seen from a distance.

One particular aspect of the Fairies' magical/telepathical abilities makes them a very central part of Dracounus life, even more so than their ability to aid in growth and health. Fairies are extremely and accutely sensitive to the basic emotions of the beings around them, especially negative ones - pain and fear, menace and ill will. When they feel a particularly intense emmission of pain or maliciousness, they will let loose a volley of unique, penetrating shrieks. This inevitably draws any other Fairies in the area, who will usually begin shrieking as well . The people of the Dracounus learn to recognize this sound at a young age, as it almost always means something very bad has happened or is about to happen. Many violent criminals have been caught thanks to the far-carrying shriek of a Fairy, and some have even been stopped in the act of doing harm by being mobbed by hundreds of Fairies at once.

Alvarunus Fairies

A higher species of Fairies lives in the Alvarunus (created by K. Anderson), and they more closely resemble the average sentient being in behavior and dress.
