Northern Region East (NRE) is one of the strongest regions in BBYO. It covers Maryland, Washington D.C., and Northern Virginia. NRE is council-predominate, so all three councils function mostly independent of one another.

Councils

NRE is made up of three councils, which vary in size from between 100 to 500 registered members:

Baltimore County, MD; Baltimore, MD; Howard County, MD

Montgomery County, MD; Howard County, MD; Prince Georges County, MD; Washington, D.C.

Fairfax County, VA; Arlington County, VA

NRE is council-predominate, so each council elects seperate council boards, has its own council director, and its own events. Chapters in different councils will sometimes program with one another, however, NRE only comes together at three different conventions each year. In leiu of a regional board, the Godolim and N'siot of the three councils form the Regional Coordinating Committee (RCC).

Regional Events

  • Regional Leadership Conference/Regional Leadership Training Institute (RLC/RLTI)

Held in late September/early October. 9th graders (and 10th graders who did not attend in 9th grade) attend RLC, and 11th and 12th graders (plus 10th graders who attended RLC in 9th grade) attend RLTI. These conventions, held simultaneously at the same place, teach leadership skills to the participants.

  • Regional Convention (RC)

Held over winter break, usually during Christmas. For as long as anyone can remember, RC has been held at the Clarion Fontainebleau Hotel in Ocean City, MD. During RC, the council presidents give their mid-states, and traditions such as the Cold Water Challenge are repeated. A regional spirit gavel is typically handed out to the AZA and BBG chapter judged to be the most spirited during the weekend.

  • Regional Kallah

Held in late February/early March. Kallah is a convention focused on Judaism. Participants learn Jewish values, have discussions, and take part in Jewish causes.

Each council holds a seperate Council Convention in late April/early May where council boards are elected and other council-specific business is attended to.
