KITT is the acronym for the car in the fictional adventure series Knight Rider staring David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight. KITT stands for Knight Industries Two Thousand. KITT is an artificial intelligence microprocessor installed in a highly advanced, very mobile, robot disguised as a 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.

Another version of KITT, known as the Knight 4000 or KIFT, appeared in the movie Knight Rider 2000. KIFT was based on a red Pontiac Banshee prototype in . The vehicle had numerous 21st Century technological improvements over the previous version of KITT, such as an advanced amphibious mode (which allows the car to ride on water like a speedboat), a virtual heads-up display, which utilized the entire windshield as a video display), and a microwave stun device that could remotely incapacitate a human target and bring them down (similar in application to a taser).

The 2008 update to Knight Rider includes a new KITT known as Knight Industries Three Thousand. The new KITT is based on a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR.

In 2008, NBC decided to bring back the Knight Rider tv show and make a movie. However, they first needed a car. NBC wanted a car that was currently in production, rear wheel drive, American, and had a decent amount of power. So they went to General Motors to see if they were interested. However, General Motors spent their budget on the Transformers Movies and the new Camaro would not be out for another four years.

After hearing about this, Ford became interested and they started talking. After looking at all other possible candidates (or lack of) NBC made the decision to make Knight Industries Three Thousand a Mustang. After the announcement was made, fan boys started crying and freaking out that the new KITT was not a Trans Am or Camaro.
