Next Scheduled Membership Meetings
We meet on Monday evening every other week and Saturday evening every other week. The Monday meetings may happen unofficially every Monday but on off weeks it is best to check in #sfvlug channel at irc.freenode.net to see if anyone is showing up. Saturday meetings are only every other Saturday with the exception only of special meetings. Please check this wiki or | SFVLUG.org or read the topic in #sfvlug for announcements. We hope to have our new server up online soon.

Venue Change<br>
What are our meetings like?
At the recent SCALE 5x we were asked many questions about what a LUG is and what were our meetings like. I'm going to go ahead and address that issue here on our wiki so all you potential new members get a chance to know what you may be getting into especially if you have a long drive to get to one of our meetings.

I can't speak for every member, I think we all have our own individual reasons for coming and we do have a quite unique and very eclectic group of folks. However, I will try and stay as objective as I can and fill you in on what you might expect from a meeting. Our meetings are very informal, recently we haven't had many scheduled presentations. We have no aversion to formal presentations and we are always welcome suggested topics, anything that you would like to have covered. We do have an eclectic group with members that are complete Linux and Unix newbies as well as highly experienced system administrators and developers. What we really have is several smaller groups meeting at once within the larger group. So, say for instance you are a system administrator, you may have a question that needs to be answered by a system level developer or there might be a newbie that needs to know how to configure /etc/fstab for the new hard drive they just installed. The newbies mostly help each other until they can't figure something out among themselves they will call on someone that may know the answer to their question.

It is a chance to meet with other computer geeks and exchange knowledge. Breaking into sub groups cuts down on spending too much time on a subject about which you may have no interest, the only down side is that meetings can get noisy with many people talking at once. It must also be said that the meetings are not only just chaos, we always try to have a period during each meeting where only one person speaks at a time. During this period of the meeting we encourage members to bring up questions or concerns. We often bring up current events that have an impact on the free exchange of knowledge. Socially and politically we are also quite eclectic and we always try to keep out topics that might be charged. While our politics and religion may not be similar we do all seem to share a love for the free and open sharing of information.

To step up a moment on my pocket sized soap box, the main reason computer science has advance so far and so fast was that in the beginning it was believed that software programs were not subject to patents or other restrictive forms of ownership. It was only later that the attorneys figured out how to raise the ladder. Fortunately the free exchange of ideas went on for a long enough of a time and there were individuals and institutions that worked against the complete monopolization of the computer industry. I could go on, but chances are I'd be preaching to the choir. That you are still reading this you have probably at least entertained the idea that open source software is a good thing for many reasons. However, rather that just let that go at that, it is important to note that Linux advocacy is also a part of our organization, but not a requirement.

OK, you say, so what then is a requirement? That's easy! All that is really required is a thirst for knowledge. If you can't make meetings in person we invite you to join through this wiki or in our IRC channel on freenode.net. In fact if you need the best up to date info on meetings, especially the unofficial Monday meetings, #sfvlug is the best place to go. There may be periods when nobody will participate for a couple of days straight, this can be frustrating especially someone not familiar with IRC, so don't give up if no one answers you right away.

It is my distinct impression that besides finding out how to install a special driver, a tip on a job opening, or other personal gain it is the opportunity to share in a community. I personally have as deep a sense of community with this organization as I have where I live. I hope to see you at a meeting soon. --Miasma 23:08, 16 February 2007 (EST)
Venues
We meet at Gayle's Perks, a coffee/frozen yogurt house in Northridge on Mondays and at Denny's on Sherman Way in Van Nuys on alternate Saturdays. Gayle's Perks has free broadband wifi, we share the communal area inside during the cold months but in warmer weather we can use the outside patio. Denny's does not have broadband but we usually set up a LAN and we will share the wireless connection of a member through a LAN. We have many members bringing their computers to meetings.

Directions
For now use the above links to get a map and directions but we will include additional information here as we continue to build.

SCALE

Admin:

This page is a discussion on the SCALE event and our participation.

Please see main Project Page for info on some of our other projects.

Perhaps we should think of making the SCALE topic more to do with "What is a LUG, and how do I join or start one?" than to focus on one particular project this year. Given the poor results with Sphinx2 lately we may not be able to put on an impressive showing with yet another retread of an old hit. I think we have a somewhat unique position in the community and have maintained a long and successful track record. It might be a good idea to share some of our experiences and pass on what we have learned as individuals and as a group. We can display individual and group projects.

We probably wouldn't be able to give a free pass to everyone making a contribution, but it would be a chance for members to show off their skills and interest in the open source community. We often get members clustered around our booth anyway this would give members a chance to more formally meet with visitors.

We are to have a meeting on the subject of SCALE at least once before the event, please look for announcements on when and where.

Alternatives
SCALE Project Meeting Approach
1. Come to table with discussed project possibilities and any backround/code thats available.

2. Set precedent for the meeting stating it won't be a social meeting and socializers will be asked to leave.

3. Field the groups capabilities
interests
coding level
languages
topic experience level
no of weekly hours they can devote
contact information (preferably telephone numbers in an effort to establish perceived accountability and show we're
serious about time based progress)
4. Discuss potential project viability and fallback given the limited time alloted (perhaps consider working 2 projects at once).

5. Open floor to alternative projects not discussed in case the group feels theres something with more potential.

6. Decide which project is most suitable based on the groups skills, desires, and most importantly donated time available.

7. Possibly have a mini intro to next meeting to try to bring some people up to speed on a given language

8. Write pseudocode to determine what code is needed. Assign Classes/Methods/Functions to groups members based on
the pseudocode spec (ie we need these classes and these methods/functions which takes this as input and returns
output in this form).

9. Create meeting outline before meeting stating the amount of time you'd like to spend discussing each item (adhereing to the
alloted time on the more irrelevant issues that might sidetrack discussion).

10. Setup some mechanism of peer review (easiest method would be to assign any one part of the project to multiple people
hopefully we'll see results from at least one of them).

11. Have definate plan and timetable for all actions when leaving the meeting, make sure people understand their task, what it entails,
the time it might take, and its due date. Also discuss alternatives to critical action items.

12. Set precedent for problem solving. If you can't accomplish this task, what alerternatives can YOU as part of the group recommend
or persue to achieve this goal by the deadline.

13. Communication! Point to sfvlug wiki, request that people spend 2 min daily checking out the SCALE projects state.

14. Write everything down!

15. Hand people a physical piece of paper with their task written on it. They won't forget and there won't be question as to what their
task was. Record the task in the project ledger.

16. Post meeting notes (minus contact information that can't be made public) and whose in charge of which task or tasks to enable perfect
information and dialoging.

17. Set a precedent to try to accomplish your assigned task as quickly as possible to enable task reassignment in the event they can
no longer accomplish their task (this might give people too much of an out and they may take the task alot less seriously if this is
even discussed, possibly only state to accomplish your task well before the deadline).

18. Socialization can occur before or after the meeting!

Comment
My assumption is that all this would be accomplished in a meeting proposed in the following section. We should probably bring this up at the next regular meeting to see how many would be willing and able to spend some time on this project. --Miasma 19:47, 24 November 2006 (EST)

Timetable
Max 7 weeks losing thansgiving and xmas/newyears weeks to relatives and responsibilities and the fact that the SCALE
meeting hasn't even been announced.

Action Items
Have a SCALE related meeting ASAP
Bring project options to the table at the meeting annoucement in hopes to limit the groups discussion in a nonstructured meeting environment.

Psyche Project

Admin:

Psyche Project Page
Psyche is a project we started for SCALE in 2003. It was designed to demonstrate speech recognition and speech synthesis on the GNU/Linux platform. We had lines of people waiting to talk to Psyche at the show. Since it was such a big hit and we will continue as long as interest holds up.

In the tradition of *nix programming Psyche itself is basically just a glue that cobbles together some existing tools. The main components being Sphinx and Festival along with a few other tools to provide a system of speech recognition and speech synthesis on a Linux based PC. Most of the original code was written in Python by Steve Petrovits & Rick Wang. Since then we have made improvements including a new module that reads IRC chat logs aloud in real time as they arrive.

If you are fluent in Python or would like to become fluent this is a great project to join. You can find some project files here. You can download all the necessary files in a tarball at: http://forpractice.com/sfvlug/psyche/psyche.tar.gz

More to follow soon!

The following contribution by Steve with comments by Kurt regarding the status of the Psyche project:
News
While searching for unrelated Python resources I stumbled across this project that is very similar to our Psyche project. It is now named Turbolift, renamed from "ALICE." Like Psyche it uses Sphinx and Festival. I'll check it out more as time permits. If nothing else perhaps we can contact the developer and see if he has had similar problems with recent Sphinx2 useage.
http://hobbiton.thisside.net/turbolift/builds/turbolift-2.0.tar.gz --Admin 22:31, 27 December 2006 (EST)

Status
PSYCHE is unviable in its current state. The only possible way to remedy this solution would be to contact CMU and ask them whats up.
Given the fact that no ones expressed any interest in pursing anything SCALE related whatsoever I doubt this will happen in
the time left before the expo in February.

Comment
I'll try contacting someone at CMU this next week. Perhaps we should consider backup plans no matter the results of any attempt to get Sphinx2 working better. This has been a continuing problem. --Miasma 19:40, 24 November 2006 (EST)

Code Vault

Admin:

Note:
What is the best way to contribute code? Should it just be placed here or should a seperate page be created?

Good question, I had intended to leave a lot of that type of decision up to whoever posted something but since this is going to be a community page it might be better to keep it less cluttered so I will suggest making a brief statement here about the code and a link to the page where the actual code lives. The discussion tab Talk:Code Vault can be used for comments rather than making further clutter here. If you haven't gotten the copyright holder's permission to use the code the link should be to the original source.

Here are some examples to give everyone a better idea, we can clean this area up later once we get more contributions:

(Let's say I'm not about the license and don't know if it is OK to reproduce.)

How to contribute code and the organization of this section will be a topic of discussion at the Saturday December 16, 2006 meeting. See Meetings for more information on the meeting.

Access Database to HTML
I have written a bash script that converts Access databases to HTML.
Source Code

I know of at least two people in the LUG who were interested in this functionality. Code is GPL.

Process Substitution (or, how to do more with less effort)
Process Substitution is a good way to do things in a single line of script or at the command line, that would otherwise take extra work like writing to temp files.

Python File Slicing
pyFileSlice is a simple utility that will chop out a section of a file that has common starting and ending tags. Pulling out the page referrers section in an Awstats data file for further analysis prompted this little bit of research. After trying 3 methods (one involving regex pattern checking over each element in a list, one involving startswith(), and one that uses startswith() and doesn't read the file all at once) the one presented here works the fastest with the least amount of memory used. Source Code.

Admin:

SFVLUG is a loosely associated group of Linux and F/OSS users. There are no dues or membership fees. We meet in the San Fernando Valley, a suburb and bedroom community of greater Los Angeles. We have meetings at least twice a month currently with plans for more as long as interest continues for this rapidly growing community. We meet in venues that do not require a fee since we do not charge dues. All we ask is that you consider purchasing food and beverages at our restaraunt and coffee house venues so we continue to be welcomed at no additional cost than our patronage.

This is an auxiliary site to our own server at sfvlug.org which is our primary site for information.
If you can't attend regular meetings you can still get involved here at this wiki, or in our IRC chat on freenode in #sfvlug.
We are a very loosely organized group of GNU/Linux and open source software enthusiasts, that live/work/meet in the San Fernando Valley, a suburb of Los Angeles in Southern Californina. You don't actually need to live in the Valley to join, but attending meetings is more difficult if you don't. Please see our Announcements page for more information on meetings. If you can't attend regular meetings you can still get involved here at this wiki, or in our IRC chat on freenode in #sfvlug.

Psyche Project Page
Psyche is a project we started for SCALE 2003. It was designed to demonstrate speech recognition and speech synthesis on the GNU/Linux platform. Most of the original code was written by Steve Petrovits & Rick Wang. We had lines of people waiting to talk to Psyche at the show. It was a big hit and we will continue as long as interest holds up.

Psyche itself is basically a glue that cobbles together Sphinx and Festival along with a few other tools to provide speech recognition and speech synthesis.
