== General Information About The Group ==

The Asterisk/Trixbox/<your open source voice platform of choice> was formed to serve the needs of Asterisk/VOIP users/developers/consultants in the San Fernando Valley. There is a lot of interest in Asterisk in this area and no group to help those with an interest get there feet wet. Many people want to use it for home/personal use as well as in a business environment.

We hope to foster an environment that encourages growth and innovation using Linux/Asterisk/Festival/Sphynx/<insert cool thing here>.

== Meeting times/locations ==
Our Asterisk SIG is reorganizing after scheduling difficulties with our telephony expert Strom Carlson. Brian is now going to head the Asterisk SIG with meeting schedule to be announced once organized.

== Group Goals ==

Our goals are:

* 1. Assist people with deploying and basic configuration of asterisk/trixbox/other voip platforms
* 2. Give guidance on more advanced configuration of asterisk.
* 3. Put asterisk consultants in touch with customers looking for telcom solutions.

== Guidelines ==

Asterisk/Trixbox etc can do many amazing and complex things limited only by your imagination. Some things can require a lot of time and effort to get running. We ask that you are reasonable in the amount of free help you seek from our group members. Don't abuse it. Many of them make there living from Asterisk deployments and are highly knowledgeable. Please be respectful of that and try to compensate them for there time when it seems right.

[[Multimedia Lab]] For people who are interested in performing multimedia functions under Linux (video/audio in particular).

What is the best way to contribute code? Should it just be placed here or should a seperate page be created?

Good question, I had intended to leave a lot of that type of decision up to whoever posted something but since this is going to be a community page it might be better to keep it less cluttered so I will suggest making a brief statement here about the code and a link to the page where the actual code lives. The discussion tab [[Talk:Code Vault]] can be used for comments rather than making further clutter here. If you haven't gotten the copyright holder's permission to use the code the link should be to the original source.

Here are some examples to give everyone a better idea, we can clean this area up later once we get more contributions:

Hi there. Welcome to my little corner of SFVLUG. I have been a member of SFVLUG for as long as I can remember. Probably around 5 or 6 years maybe more :)

I maintain a number of Open Source projects and my name can be found attached to almost all the major ones (Wine/Gnome/OpenOffice). I am a system administrator with a bad case of software hacking. I live in the San Fernando Valley and am a regular member/contributor to SFVLUG. Its a great group of people and I have developed a number of professional relationships that will last for years to come.

You can find me at pretty much every SFVLUG meeting. I enjoy answering a wide variety of system related questions. I have even been known to pick up contracting gigs at the meetings. I will often whip up a quick script or hack right on the spot. SFVLUG is the place to come for collobrative hacking and problem solving. We often have hardware hacking projects as well.

Then once you have an account click on your member name to go create your own personal page. Here are some links that may be of particular interest to those who are new to Linux and the Open Source community and want to learn more.

Before we get too far, the first thing to learn is that Google is indeed your friend. Here is a link to Google's special Linux search:

Before you start bothering your friends or strangers the first thing to learn is how to ask questions that will return useful information and also won't make people upset. You don't want to alienate the people best able to answer questions with answers not found anywhere in print. This guide should be viewed before posting questions to forums, newsgroups, mailing lists, etc. It is appropriate reading for computer users of all skill levels. http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html The author, [http://www.catb.org/~esr/ Eric S. Raymond] also has some other FAQs and HOWTOs at http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/ his emphasis in on bringing people to a high technical level and may contain information specific to IT professionals and people that want to become IT professionals.

If you haven't yet installed Linux or are looking to change to a different flavor of Linux this site has good up to date information on what is available. http://distrowatch.com/ Another great download resource is http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/ with much Linux software available for download from their servers. You can also find documentation at http://tldp.org/ at a different URL but same folks. They are a collaboration of the center for the public domain and [http://www.unc.edu/ unc-ch] with many free and open resources besides software. http://www.ibiblio.org/

A good set of online Linux courses can be found over at [http://www.linux.org Linux.org] That's a great jumping off site for Linux users of all levels. It is where I (Charles Wyble) spent the majority of my online research time in the first year of using Linux.

==Software Resources==
So if your new to Linux you probably want an idea of what software you can use with it. Now you can't just go down to your local computer store and buy software for Linux. However you can find software on the internet. The two most popluar sites for finding/downloading software are:

*[http://http://freshmeat.net/ Freshmeat.net] A site that tracks releases of several thousand packages. A great site to simply browse and see the wide variety of software available.

*[http://sourceforge.net Source Forge (also known as SF)] This site is used to host free/open source software. It is hands down the most popular hosting site out there. I (Charles) host multiple open source projects on the site.

The third way to find software is the package management system in your distrubtution. What I like to do when searching for software is to go on Freshmeat/SF and do a keyword search. I then sort on various criteria (popularity/last update etc). I then open up the websites associated with the software in various tabs. Once I have selected some canidates I install them via my package manager. I use [http://www.debian.org Debian] based distrubutions which contain some 15,000 software packages for easy installation. Others in the LUG use [http://fedora.redhat.com/ Fedora] It all comes down to a matter of taste :)
