  • Barnes WWT: 8 Mealy Redpolls (Wildside) plus Bittern at dusk, 3 Water Pipits, Rock Pipit, Jack Snipe, 13 Brambling west (Birdguides).
  • Hackney Marshes: 2 Firecrest (by the south gate to Middx Filter Beds, seen together, showing well at 1515hr) (Paul Cook).
  • Tottenham Court Road: 1 male sparrowhawk floating between plane trees (Peter Jones).
  • St James's Park: c230 Woodpigeons SW at 08.00 (Andrew Self).

  • West Thurrock Marshes (6.40-9.10): 880 Wood Pigeons all SSW, 69 Fieldfare, 48 Redwing, 2 Siskin, 214 Redshank, 4 Rock Pipit, 4 Grey Plover, 17 Curlew, 8 Yellow Legged Gulls, 44 Meadow Pipits, 8 Black-tailed Godwit, 9 Common Snipe, 3 redpoll sp, Goldcrest and 34 Goldfinch.(Dave Morrison).
  • Staines Res: 1 Pintail (drake), 6 Goldeneye, 1 Green Sandpiper (Ken Purdey).
  • Trent Park: 1 Stonechat (m), 8 Redwing, 50 BH Gull (Pete Lowman).
  • Paddington Green: brief views of a Numenius flying south (in all likelihood a Curlew) 18.03hrs, a bit distant to be certain (Des McKenzie).

October 30 2007

  • Barnes WWT: Yellow-browed Warbler calling near Headley Hide 15.20pm loosely associated with a tit flock, but remained stubbornly invisible; plus 4 Siskin, Lesser Redpoll, Chiffchaff, 7+ Ring-necked Parakeets, numerous Wigeon, Gadwall, Teal, Lapwing, etc. Jack Snipe also reported, but again elusive! (David Callahan).
  • Hackney Marshes: 1 Firecrest (by path between Lea navigation and Southern gate of Middx. beds), 1 ad. Med Gull, 25 Common Gull, 1 GBBG, 48 Teal, 1 M.Pipit, 3 Siskin, 3 Redwing, Kingfisher. (Paul Cook).
  • Wormwood Scrubs: c3,000 Woodpigeon generally south, c40 Fieldfare, c32 Redwing, 1 Mistle Thrush, c30 Meadow Pipit, c20 Chaffinch, at least 1 Siskin over, 1 Goldcrest, c5 Stonechat, 6 Long-tailed Tits headed over at medium high - probably local birds & of general interest; a Carrion Crow was watched hanging upside down from a branch like a deranged fruitbat!   • Hilly Fields Park, Whitewebbs Wood and Forty Hall, Enfield: 4 female Shoveler, at Whitewebbs Wood Lake; 2 Kestrel; 3 Green Woodpecker; 4 Great Spotted Woodpecker; 3 Grey Wagtail; 10 Goldcrest; 2 Nuthatch; 3 Treecreeper; 1 Marsh Tit, at 'Archery Wood', Forty Hall (My 10th consecutive year for Poecile palustris in the Enfield Area!); 3 Bullfinch, heard calling (Robert Callf).
  • Dagenham Chase LNR: Peregrine circling over the Slack 1.05-1.10pm, Cetti's Warbler by Bardag Lake,(it must be commuting between Bardag and Hooks Hall Pond ), pair of Stonechat, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Rook, 5 Common Snipe, 2 Reed Bunting,Mallard with 3 new ducklings and a Jackdaw heard.   • London Wetland Centre: Yellow-browed Warbler at 14.10hrs calling and showed briefly behind the wader scrape hide, juv female Peregrine, 1 Water Pipit, 1 Swallow south, 1 first-winter Ring Ouzel near Headley Hide at dusk, 2 Fieldfare (Nick Senior).
  • Holmethorpe SP: ad Mediterranean Gull, Rock Pipit east (SBC).
  • Mayesbrook Park: 1 Little Egret, 6 Shoveler, pair of Gadwall, 1 Kingfisher (Paul Hawkins).
  • Dagenham Chase LNR: Probable Jack Snipe flushed at close range (bird flew off silently, and very dark-backed with contrasting tramlines, bill length not seen though); also, Cetti's Warbler, Water Rail and 7 Fieldfare (Vince Halley-Frame).
  • Fairlop Waters: Tawny Owl, Wheatear, 5 Redpoll and Kingfisher (Alan Bell per VH-F).
  • Trent Park: 2 Stonechat, 6 Redwing, Fieldfare, 6 Goldfinch (Pete Lowman).

  • Dartford: 49+ Yellow-legged Gull in the area (Birdguides)
  • Bedfont Lakes Country Park: 49 Wigeon, 39 Gadwall, Water Rail, Woodcock, Common Snipe, 8 Fieldfare, Grey Wagtail; also, hybrid Hooded Merganser (Adam Cheeseman).
  • Rainham Marshes RSPB: 3 White-fronted Goose still present, Little Stint, Water Pipit, Mealy Redpoll (RBA); plus, 2 Golden Plover, Goldcrest (Shaun Harvey, Paul Hawkins); also, 9 Pintail, Peregrine Falcon, Saker Falcon type hybrid (esc), Grey Plover, Ruff, 21 Common Snipe, Redshank, 1y Turtle Dove, Kingfisher, Rock Pipit, 6 Stonechat, 8 Fieldfare, 9 Redwing, 2 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Lesser Redpoll (ELBF).
  • Aldenham CP: 11 Mandarin (5f+6m) + the usual culprits (Steve Blake).
  • Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens: Egyptian Goose, 3 Gadwall (2m/1f), 16 Shoveler, 375+Black-headed Gull (inc 2 very unwell birds at Round Pond), 6 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 6 Herring Gull, m Great Spotted Woodpecker; thrushes evident around Kensington Gardens leafyard and trees toward Round Pond, comprising: 19 Blackbird (9 1w males), 5 Song Thrush, 16 Redwing, 5 Mistle Thrush; also, Coal Tit, Treecreeper, 3 Jay, c350 Starling (Des McKenzie).
  • Kew Gardens: Firecrest (SBC).
  • London Wetland Centre: Rock Pipit, Water Pipit, Sand Martin, House Martin (SBC), pair Stonechat, Redpoll, Jack Snipe (Martin Honey).
  • Beddington SF: Shelduck, 9 Wigeon, Little Egret, Water Rail, 2 Dunlin, 2 Common Snipe, Green Sandpiper (Dip or Glory).
  • Wimbledon Town Centre: c. 75 Pied Wagtail roosted in small plane trees outside Tesco Metro (Nick Tanner).
  • Waltham cross: 30 golden plover with 200 Lapwing at Oylers farm (Brian Dawton per ASMS)

  • Richmond Park: Rough-legged Buzzard reported flying over near Pen Ponds at 9.30am approx. being mobbed by parakeets (per ASMS).
  • London Wetland Centre: Water Pipit, Cetti's Warbler, Yellow-browed Warbler (still) present by Headley Hide (SBC).
  • Rainham Marshes RSPB: 3 (2 ad, 1 1st-winter) White-fronted Geese still present, 1w Turtle Dove near feeders, 1 Water Pipit, 400 Lapwing, 45 Black-tailed Godwit, Ruff, 5 Pintail, Migrant Hawker (David Bradnum); also, Bullfinch, Kingfisher, 5 Stonechat, 3 Rock Pipit, Grey Plover, Ring-necked Parakeet, 51 Redshank, 44 Dunlin, 2 Curlew, 2 Common Darters and a Red Admiral (Dave Morrison).

  • Rainham Marshes RSPB: 98 Greylag Goose, 31 Canada Goose, 260 Wigeon, 4 Avocet, 12 Common Snipe, 18 Curlew, 70 Black-tailed Godwit, 120 Redshank, 1y Turtle Dove, 3 Kingfisher, 3 Rock Pipit, 21 Redwing, 2 Fieldfare, Continental Coal Tit, 12 Great Tit, 7 Blue Tit, Brambling, 70 Greenfinch, 10 Goldfinch (ELBF).
  • Amwell GP: juv Iceland Gull present in roost again from 17:10-18:00 only (Hertsbirding).
  • Staines Res: 3 Brent Goose (pm), Peregrine Falcon, 3 Black-necked Grebe, Little Gull, 2 Rock Pipit (RBA).
  • Leyton 07:45-08:15: A couple of Redwings, Chaffinches and Pied Wagtails W (Paul Whiteman).
  • Alexandra Park: Reed Bunting (110th site species for the year); also, at least 2 Water Rail calling from Conservation Pond, Redwing and Chaffich over Cricket Scrub (J.Murray).
  • Wood Green: Grey Wagtail (singing briefly), 3 Redwing north 08:50hrs, 9 Siskin low over Brook Road at 12:15hrs (appeared to fly from private garden) (Des McKenzie).
  • Horsenden Hill/Paradise Fields (early am): Rock Pipit 1 (ploughed field then off west), Redwings 39 NW, Fieldfares 15 W, Stonechat (1 male 2 females), Firecrest (1 male near the canal road bridge), Chiffchaff 4 (Nick Senior).
  • Trent Park : 5 Ring-necked Parakeet, flew over; 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker; 5 Redwing; Goldcrest (several); 1 female Bullfinch (Robert Callf).
  • Vicarage Farm, Enfield: 1 Kestrel; 3 Red-legged Partridge; 8 Lapwing, flew N; 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker; 1 female/imm Stonechat, at 'Barracks'; 4 Fieldfare, at Hog Hill; 1 male Brambling with 60+ Chaffinch, Hog Hill (Robert Callf).

October 24 2007

  • Rainham Marshes RSPB: Great White Egret still present but Cattle Egret not reported (RBA/Birdguides); 2nd-winter Caspian Gull found by Howard Vaughan and Turtle Dove found by Andy Tweed (Paul Whiteman along for the ride!). Plus Bearded Tit, Cetti's Warbler, Water Rail, Water Pipit, Ruff, 4+ Yellow-legged Gulls, 62+ Black-tailed Godwits, 3 Curlews, 25 Dunlin, c60 Redshanks, 5+ GBBGulls, 2 Goldcrests, m Sparrowhawk, 4+ Stonechats (David Callahan).
  • Amwell GPs: juvenile Iceland Gull in the roost this evening from the viewpoint; also 2 Mediterranean Gull, two drake Red-crested Pochard & 7 Little Egret, Stonechat, Redshank, Shelduck (Birdguides/Hertsbirding).
  • Stoke Newington Reservoirs (vis mig 0730-0930): 2 Siskin (down, new river east), 33 Redwing, 1 Jackdaw, 2 Fieldfare, 1 Meadow Pipit, 64 Woodpigeon, 11 Chaffinch, 7 Goldfinch, c80 Starling, 5 Song Thrush; also, Common Snipe (flushed from new river east), 51 Gadwall & 2 Common Gulls (Mark Pearson, Paul Robinson).
  • London Wetland Centre (a.m): Peregrine very large juv female(or hybrid!), Merlin (ad male flew downriver), Jack Snipe 2, Rock Pipit 1 west, Chiffchaff 4, Mealy Redpoll (2 wildside) (Nick Senior). Also (pm) Water Pipit (Main Lake), 2 Rock Pipit (Grazing Marsh), 51 Pochard (Matthew Palmer).

  • Trent Park Area: 1 adult male Sparrowhawk; 2 Kestrel; 3 Red-legged Partridge; 1 female Green Woodpecker; 1 Little Owl, heard calling; 1 Grey Wagtail; 4 Goldcrest; 1 Lesser Redpoll; 2 Bullfinch, heard calling (Robert Callf).

  • Rainham Marshes RSPB: Cattle Egret still present and showing well on Aveley pool at 11.55am; also Marsh Harrier through. (RBA)
  • Walthamstow Reservoirs: f & 1W drake Goldeneye, 78 Gadwall (my highest ever count here), Jackdaw, 13 Wigeon, 16 Mistle Thrushes, 2 Com Sands, pair Stonechats (David Callahan).
  • Leyton 07:40-08:20: In perfect conditions - 9 Woodpigeons W, 6 Chaffich NW, A few Goldfinch W. Don't these birds know they are supposed to be migrating! (Paul Whiteman).
  • Tower Hamlets Cemetery (0800-0830): 7 Fieldfares, 55 Woodpigeons, 2 Chaffinches, Grey Wagtail, Siskin h, 2+ Goldcrests, pair Canada Geese over (46th sp this year) (Bob Watts).
