November 15 2007

  • Alexandra Park: Brambling, Siskin, 35 Fieldfares north, 2 Goldcrests and Water Rail in the conservation area/pond (Andrew Gardener, Dominic Mitchell, Gareth Richards and Bob Watts), but no sign by 9am of yesterday's Firecrest.
  • QEII Res: Little Auk 0717-0724. Bird appeared out of mist, landed 50m off the NE corner, dived, surfaced, then flew off south into the mist! (Dave Harris). No sign 10.40 - 11.40 in clear conditions(Geoff Barter)
  • Green Park: Brambling & 15 Siskin flew west at 07.55 (Andrew Self).
  • Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens: 3 Egyptian Goose, 1 colour-ringed (green) adult Mediterranean Gull, 2 Tawny Owl, 1 Goldfinch (Paul Bruty).

November 14 2007

  • Queen Mother Res: flock of 8 Little Auk between 13:10hrs and 13:18hrs when they flew off east, no further sign by 14:00hrs; also, a Polish-ringed 1W Caspian Gull at 11:30hrs - please note, permit access only (CDRH per FM).
  • Bedfont Lakes CP: Brambling over E 7.40am (Adam Cheeseman)
  • Hounslow Heath: Woodcock, male Sparowhawk, Skylark, and several Meadow Pipits. (Adam Cheeseman)
  • Alexandra Park: single Firecrest gave fine views at 12:34hrs in scrub c75metres north along path from Conservation Pond (in area near marker post), f Gadwall, 2 Little Grebe, 25 Common Gull, Green Woodpecker; no sign of tristis Chiffchaff (Des McKenzie).
  • Acton: Woodcock flew over West Way opposite Braid Avenue (RBA).
  • London Wetland Centre: Slavonian Grebe, Brambling through (RBA).
  • Middlesex Filter Beds: 7 Lesser Redpolls and 5 Siskins (feeding in trees by main western entrance), 5 Teal, 2 Chiffchaffs, 18 Fieldfares, 6 Redwings, 2 Green Woodpeckers, 1 Grey Wagtail (Mark Pearson)
  • Abney Park Cemetery: feeding flock included 1 Coal Tit, c4 Goldcrests and c15 LT Tits (Mark Pearson)
  • Clissold Park: 1 Redwing, 3 RR Parakeets, 9 Pochard, 3 Shovelers (Mark Pearson)
  • Oakwood Park, N14: 1 Green Woodpecker; 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker; 1 Ring-necked Parakeet; 2 Pied Wagtail; 1 Redwing; 2 Fieldfare; 7 Greenfinch,feeding on Field Maple (Robert Callf).
  • Ridge Ave., N21: 1 Grey Wagtail (Robert Callf).

  • Dagenham Chase LNR: Period of observation 11.05am - 4.55pm. 65 species recorded, 4 heard only. Highlights include, 2 Grey Wagtail, 1 Cetti's Warbler,4 Pochard, 31 Fieldfare, F Stonechat, 4 Little Egret, 12 Common Snipe, 2 Bullfinch 1M 1F, 1 Little Owl, 2 Jackdaw, 1 Siskin, 1 Chiffchaff, and 1 Great Black-backed Gull. The 4 species heard only were, 1 Brambling, 1 Redpoll, 1 M Pheasant and 1-2 Water Rail at 4.42pm. ( Vince Halley-Frame and Jonathan Lethbridge ).

November 13 2007

  • Rainham Marshes RSPB: Marsh Harrier flew east 07:45hrs (RBA).
  • Staines Res: 3 Black-necked Grebe on south basin (RBA).
  • East India Dock NR: 1 Brambling still in copse, 4 Little Grebe, Shelduck (Paul Hyland)
  • Sutton Town Centre: 1 Peregrine sitting on Quadrant House, then left westward. Second week of residency (Steve Gale)
  • Stoke Newington Reservoirs: 1 Reed Bunting, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Grey Wagtail (TeRNS)
  • Trent Park: 2 Stonechat still present on the "old golf course", Fieldfare, 50 BH Gull.( Pete Lowman).
  • Clissold Park, Stoke N'ton: 3 RR Parakeets, 2 Redwings, 8 Pochards, 4 Shoveler, c15 Greenfinches, c20 Goldfinches (Mark Pearson)
  • Dagenham Chase LNR: Female Goldeneye on Chase Waters until dusk, 1 or 2 Woodcock flushed by the river Rom, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 9 Common Snipe, 4 Pochard, 2 Jackdaw, 1 Grey Wagtail and 1 Female Pheasant (Vince Halley-Frame).
  • Beddington SF: 5 Wigeon, Water Rail, Chiffchaff (Dip or Glory).

November 12 2007

  • Broadwater GP: 36 Little Egrets flew in to roost from 16:10-16:46 (Birdguides)
  • Leyton (10:45): a Woodcock flew past the house low west (Paul Whiteman).
  • Fitzroy Square (W1T): Woodcock over at roof height heading N 09:00 (Peter Jones).
  • Stoke Newington Reservoirs: 20 Redwing, 1 Fieldfare (all NW), c50 BH Gull, c10 LBB Gull, c10 Herring Gull, c25 Tufted Duck, 1 Pochard (Laurence Pitcher, Tony Butler); also, at 16.30 1 Common Snipe, 1 Kingfisher (TeRNS).
  • London Wetland Centre (am): Pomarine Skua - 2 dark juveniles flew high SE at 0740, Ring-necked Duck/Tufted Duck hybrid 1 male, Woodpigeon 1937 SSW before 8 am, Water Pipit - 2 main lake islands, Stonechat 1 male grazing marsh, Fieldfare 50 NW, Redwing 8 SE, Chiffchaff 3, Chaffinch 70 W, Brambling 4 W, Goldfinch 35 WWF area, Lesser Redpoll 5 WWF area, Siskin 6 SW & 5 WWF area (Nick Senior).
  • Northaw Great Wood: 6 Great Spotted Woodpecker; 15 Goldcrest; 6 Marsh Tit; 6 Coal Tit; 10 Nuthatch; 7 Treecreeper (Robert Callf).
  • Broomfield Park, Palmers Green: 1 male Shoveler; 1 adult-winter Mediterranean Gull; 1 Red Admiral (Robert Callf).
  • Alexandra Park (13:00-14:00hrs): no sign of the tristis Chiffchaff; 3 Gadwall, 4 Little Grebe, Redwing, 2 Mistle Thrush, m Blackcap (Cricket Scrub), 4 Goldcrest, redpoll sp in from south at 13.55hrs, ditched into trees near Conservation Pond (small and dark looking in flight so presumably a Lesser) (Des McKenzie); also, Fieldfare flew from Ckt Scrub 0800 (Bob Watts).
  • East India Dock: 1 Collared Dove over high NE (site tick for me), 2+ Brambling in copse (another site tick for me), 2 male Black Redstart in copse, 4 Little Grebe, 2 Shelduck, 100+ Teal, Song Thrush (Richard Harrison).
  • South Norwood Lake: 6 Cormorant, 50+ Black-headed Gull, 14 Tufted Duck, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Green Woodpecker, 2 Nuthatch, 10 Ring-necked Parakeet, 6 House Sparrow, 2 Redwing, 8 Goldfinch, 1 Pied Wagtail (John Watson).
  • Clissold Park: 5 RR Parakeets, 4 Pochard, 3 Little Grebes (Mark Pearson).
  • Trent Park: 2 Stonechat, 6 Fieldfare, Song Thrush, Treecreeper, Goldcrest, Tufted Duck, 50 BH Gull. (Pete Lowman).
  • Barking: Short-eared owl over town for 5 mins before heading south west towards beckton (Paul Hawkins).
  • Mayesbrook Park: 3 Goldeneye (2 drake,1 fem), 3 Gadwall, 7 Shoveler, 6 Pochard, 3 Little Egret, Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers (Paul Hawkins).
  • Parsloes Park: 1 Little Egret, 2 Shoveler, 2 Redwing, 1 Meadow Pipit (Paul Hawkins).
  • Dagenham Chase LNR: 17 Golden Plover flew North, 5 Reed Bunting, 7 Common Snipe; yesterday: 9 Siskin. ( Vince Halley-Frame ).
  • West Thurrock Marshes: 32 Curlew, 2 Grey Plover, 2 Siskin, 2 Stonechat, 282 Redshank, 214 Dunlin, Oystercatcher, Woodcock, 26 Redwing, 2 Yellow Legged Gulls, Red Admiral and Common Darter.(Dave Morrison)

November 11 2007

  • Bookham Common: male Firecrest feeding and calling in small stand of holly trees south of the main lake and to the east of the bridleway at 12:30 (Adam Cheeseman); 2 Firecrest present (SBC).
  • Isle of Dogs: the regular adult Ring-billed Gull again present at Thames foreshore at the end of Glen Affric Avenue to 09:30hrs at least, but mobile (RBA).
  • Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens: Egyptian Goose, 5 Gadwall, Woodcock flushed by dogwalker near Kensington Palace at 13:40hrs (flew toward Bayswater Road), colour-ringed (green on left, not read) adult-winter Mediterranean Gull showing well at the Round Pond to 15:15hrs at least, colour-ringed (white 7Y7) adult-winter Black-headed Gull (14 years old, probably hatched in Copenhagen), 21 Herring Gull, 2 Pied Wagtail, 400+ Starling (Des McKenzie).
  • Walton Res: no sign of yesterday's Pomarine Skua; 5 Goldeneye, Common Sandpiper (SBC).
  • East India Dock NR: 2 Kingfisher, 4 Little Grebe, 2 Shelduck, 5 Chaffinch, Common Gull, GBB Gull (Paul Hyland).
  • South Norwood Lake: 20 Tufted Duck, 6 Cormorant, 70+ Black-headed Gull, 2 Goldcrest, 30+ Long-tailed Tit, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Nuthatch, 10 Goldfinch, 8 Chaffinch, 5 Dunnock, 4 House Sparrow (John Watson).
  • Crossness LNR: 8 Fieldfare, 8 Siskin (Gabriel Jamie, Roger Taylor)
  • London Wetland Centre: Peregrine, Jack Snipe, Water Pipit (SBC).
  • Stoke Newington Reservoirs: Cetti's Warbler (East Res, 1415-1445, calling and brief view), 7 Siskins, 2 Chiffchaffs, 1 Water Rail, 10 Mistle Thrushes, 1 Redwing, 5 Little Grebes (Mark Pearson).
  • Oakwood Park, N14: 3 Stock Dove, flew over; 1 Skylark, flew over calling; 2 Pied Wagtail; 2 Mistle Thrush; 3 Song Thrush; 1 Redwing; 2 Fieldfare; 12+ Blackbird; 3 Jay; 1 Nuthatch; 3 Goldfinch (Robert Callf).
  • Heathrow M4 Spur Junction : 15:15 Flock of about 70 Lapwings with 2 Kestrels splitting the flock up for several minutes - also 130 + starling also disturbed

November 10 2007

  • QE2 Res Walton: pale phase adult Pomarine Skua still present @9.30 (RBA), see Photos, then flew to Bessborough Res/Walton @12; also another early morning at Queen Mother Res (per RBA).
  • Richmond Park: c30 Redwing, 9 Stonechat, 2 Siskin (Neil Anderson).
  • South Norwood Lake: 4 Cormorant, 10 Tufted Duck, 100+Black-headed Gull, Herring Gull, 1 Sparrowhawk, 4 Redwing, 2 Fieldfare, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Grey Wagtail, 1 Pied Wagtail, 2 Goldcrest, 10+Goldfinch, 20+ Long-tailed Tit, 2 Mistle Thrush (John Watson, Gavin Hawgood).
  • Canon's Farm (Banstead): 1 adult female Peregrine, 6 Brambling (Steve Gale).
  • Trent Park: 2 Stonechat, 3 Meadow Pipit, 50 BH Gull, Tufted Duck (Pete Lowman).
  • Wanstead Park: 2 Mute Swan, 21 Tufted Duck, 30+ Mallard, 16 Pochard, Wigeon, 18 Gadwall, 9 Shoveler, 9 Little Grebe, 12 Moorhen, 40+ Coot, 49 BH Gull, 2 Common Gull, 30+ Woodpigeon, Green Woodpecker, GS Woodpecker, Greenfinch, 2 Chaffinch, 3 Goldfinch, Song Thrush, 3 Robin, Wren, 13 Blackbird, 5 LT Tit, Great Tit, 2 Blue Tit, 17 Magpie, 8 Jackdaw, 15 Carrion Crow (J Lethbridge).
  • Walthamstow Res (N side): 1 Little Egret, 1 Grey Wagtail, 5 Green Sandpipers, 15 Teal (Quentin Given).
  • Alexandra Park: Siberian Chiffchaff (Tristis) in cricket scrub. First seen and heard, briefly, on 8th, but not observed on 9th. Only positively identified later from call and song (Gareth Richards, Andrew Gardener).

November 9 2007

  • Leyton: 14:10; Brambling over also 3 Skuas, almost certainly Poms, fly in fairly high from the NNE, one circled round a bit and all three flew off SSW, at least one a light phase. (Paul Whiteman)
  • Bookham Common: Firecrest (Birdguides)
  • East India Dock NR: Kingfisher, 4 Little Grebe, 200+ Teal, 200+ BH Gull, 2 Shelduck, 0 Tufted Duck! (Paul Hyland) - one more Kingfisher for a total of 2 (seen together). Also Chaffinch, GS Woodpecker, and 2 Pied Wagtail (J Lethbridge)
  • Trent Park: 2 Stonechat, 3 Meadow Pipit, 2 Goldfinch, LBB Gull, 50 BH Gull,Kestrel, GS Woodpecker. ( Pete Lowman)
  • Staines Res: 16 Kittiwakes flew W (a mixed-age group of 12 through at 1530hrs, then four adults through at 1545hrs); also three Black-necked Grebes still on the S basin (Rob Innes).
  • Mayesbrook Park: 5 Little Egrets (highest count for me, not bad for an urban park!) 5 Shoverler,3 Gadwall,1 Teal, 7 Pochard,G S Woodpecker.(Paul Hawkins)

November 8 2007

  • Hackney Marshes: Firecrest (at least 1 still present, though mobile), 15 Common Gull, 1 GBBG, 64 Teal, 2 Redwing, 2 Fieldfare, 1 M.Pipit, Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail. (Paul Cook)

  • Walthamstow Marshes: 2 Skylarks, 8 Meadow Pipits, 9 Fieldfares, 22 Mistle Thrushes, 4 Linnets, c30 Pied Wags, 3 Grey Wags (Mark Pearson)

November 7 2007

  • London Wetland Centre: adult Ring-billed Gull reported low south at 11:40; also, Short-eared Owl flew northeast at 08:45 (Birdguides).
  • East India Dock Basin / Leamouth: 14 Redshank in high tide roost, 140 Teal, 3 Com Sands, 2 Shelduck, Kingfisher, male Sparrowhawk, 3 Grey Wags, 7 Goldfinches, Long-tailed Tit (my first for the site!) (David Callahan).
  • Stoke Newington Reservoir: 8 Redwing, 4 Chaffinch, 1 Brambling, 2 Greenfinch, 11 Goldfinch, 10 Starling, 1 Siskin (all WNW), 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Water Rail (H) (Laurence Pitcher). also Kingfisher, 2 Redwings, c400 Black-headed Gulls, 18+ Common Gulls, p.m. (Mark Pearson)

November 5 2007

  • London Wetland Centre WWT: Mealy Redpoll still; 56 Brambling west (Birdguides) also Common Snipe, 5 Fieldfare north (4 of which dropped in before continuing north), 2+ Siskin (West Bank/ Castelnau), 50-60 Goldfinch, Water Pipit (island opposite Dulverton Hide). Duck numbers down following 'fireworks weekend' but seems to have affected some species more than others: 119 Shoveler, 80 Gadwall, 126 Teal, 63 Wigeon, 14 Pochard, 61 Lapwing (Matthew Palmer).
  • Brent Reservoir: drake Red-crested Pochard in North Marsh (Andrew Verrall)
  • Bedfont Lakes CP: 69 Wigeon, 48 Gadwall, Lesser Redpoll, Siskin, Fieldfares, Redwings, (Bittern present but not seen today) (Adam Cheeseman).
  • Wormwood Scrubs: 1 Woodcock treetop height heading NE - site tick! Also 1 Skylark, 25 Fieldfare, 2 Redwing, c4 Stonechat, 3 Jackdaw, c30 Meadow Pipit, c350 Woodpigeon over & c250 Starling (David Lindo).

  • London Wetland Centre WWT: Yellow-browed Warbler still present (Bird Guides).
  • Richmond Park: Dartford Warbler, 300m SW of Isabella disabled car park in bracken with Stonechats (Jan Wilczur).
  • Isle of Dogs: Kittiwake (adult) on the River Thames just downstream of Glenaffric Avenue mid morning (Richard Bonser).
  • Littlebrook Lake, Dartford: 2 adult Yellow-legged Gulls early a'noon plus 2 Wigeon (Richard Bonser)
  • Brent Reservoir: 1 Brambling, c540 Woodpigeons SW, 1 Jackdaw, 20 Fieldfare, 70 Redwing, 2 Skylarks, 4 Siskin & 160 Starlings (Andrew Self)
  • Dagenham Chase: 1 Jack Snipe, 10 Common Snipe, 10+Sisken, 1+ Cetti's Warbler, 4 Chiffchaff (inc 1 singing) Green and Greatspot, Grey Wag, 1 Little Owl.(Paul,Roger Hawkins)

  • London Wetland Centre WWT: Yellow-browed Warbler still present; Red Kite over at 12:40 plus 14 Bramblings over (Birdguides)
  • Hackney Marshes: mid-a.m. No sign of the Firecrests. 3 Little Grebes and a Kingfisher on the R. Lea by the Pitch & Putt course. A (possibly Large)White Butterfly from the house at mid-day, don't recall seeing one of those in November before.(Paul Whiteman)

  • Dagenham Chase LNR: Short-eared Owl flushed from long grass by a Golden Retriever at 3.25pm,( there's a good dog !), then mobbed by Crows before circling high South. 2 Little Egrets on the Slack then flew up the Rom valley towards the YMCA, pair of Stonechat,Cetti's Warbler heard by Hooks Hall Pond.( Vince Halley-Frame ).
